Abandoned suitcase prompts response

A section of 30 Avenue in Vernon was cordoned off about 7 a.m. Monday morning as Vernon RCMP responded to a suspicious package left outside of the Nixon Wenger Building.

Police closed off 30 Avenue from 27 Street to 26 Street. Nobody was allowed to go into work.

"Police are currently on the scene. The 2706-30 Ave had a report of a suspicious black suitcase and a water bottle that was in the front of the building when the employees reported for work at the coffee shop there," said Vernon RCMP Gord Molendyk.

"Our officers were called. The explosive trained dog from Kelowna was called up to assist. The road was closed. It was precautionary as you can appreciate."

The suitcase did not contain any explosive device, however, the contents of the suitcase are not being divulged at this point.

"We didn’t want to take any chances because it was left there prior to. It wasn’t like they had opened for business and they were inside and someone may have left it there while they were inside, It was left in front before they (employees) arrived for work. Because of the type of building it is we didn’t want to take any chances," said Molendyk.

The area was re-opened to traffic and employees in the affected businesses were allowed to go to work at about 10 a.m.

Vernon RCMP are conducting an investigation into this matter.

That's the oldest negotiations trick there is,

Lawyer representing X- wife wants 2.5 million dollars, plus spousal support, plus child support as she has left you the house and all of the contents as she has packed up the kids and is living outside the matrimonial property.

Husband, loads his only suitcase with all his worldly possessions and goes to her lawyer and demands, 2.5 million plus living allowance and requests to live with the lawyer until he can get back on his feet as he is leaving the wife everything they own.

Lawyer settles for about 50% and there is no spousal support to boot!!

chances are as it is on the end of main street in vernon it was some homeless guys stuff and he was trying to get a coffee inside.
in swarms the RCMP in swat gear and shuts down part of downtown (because we have had so many real bomb scares in town.. none) and call in a sniffer dog from kelowna.
money well spent.
wonder how many real crimes went unchecked while this terrorist plot in Vernon was unfolded.
seems 100% stupid to me.
yes its fine to be safe but as it was in front of a coffee shop the two cops inside should have easily evaluated the situation and called a garbage man, not the entire swat force.
judgement is supposed to go on facts is it not?
how many terrorist bombs have gone off in Canada?
let alone Vernon.

I remember a time when, if you needed to get rid of some extra garbage, all you had to do was gift wrap it, leave it at the bus station and someone would steal it. These days they call the SWAT team... :runforlife:
