Finally the Penticton Herald got the opportunity to print Dan Ashton's photo
on the front page - for a legitimate reason - he won the Liberal nomination.

James Miller was so thrilled, he even printed his own photo for the story.

and this is how the new [ahem] leader is working out...poorly and arrogantly...look at how he talks down to Kevin Proteau [and company] after all his hard work.

Poorly and arrogantly?? I took the time to view the video and all I saw was the patience of a saint. But don't believe me, watch it yourself. The time in the video that is relevant starts at about the 25 minute mark and continues thru to about the 33 minute mark after which the "nelson" fellow wraps up. If anyone was "out of line" it was him but overall I think all parties behaved properly.
Lightshine, if you are going to post a long video like that you should at least give people a time frame to skip to otherwise most would not sit thru it all looking for the part you are refering to.

A saint? Yeah - Keven Proteau was a saint. You can see a little bit
of 'hatred' in Ashton as he 'shows' incredible patience.

I was going to leave ol Dan's reputation alone til at least next year (lol) but its hard when he keeps just doing questionable things. Story on the TV news tonight re a big celebration at Kelowna Airport for the inaugural run of United Airlines from YLW to LAX. No problem; good story however the official who was front and centre in the camera was none other than our Mayor. Now he IS allowed to do that as a private citizen but it smells terribly of a Political move on his part. Again, trying to step into Provincial politics he is allowed this and it was on his own time; however he should remember where the boundaries of his ridings presently are and where they might be, should he win next May. No farther than a bit North of Summerland. He should be promoting YYF airport and I know he HAS but stay away from Kelowna territory. We must push the "Shop Local" issue down here if our own airport is going to survive. Again, in all fairness he can do whatever he wants as a citizen but he didnt look too happy with the camera pointed at him, so I suspect he knows he was caught. Others may think differently; thats their option.

You should simply start an “I hate Dan Ashton” thread. Ashton could find a cure for cancer and you would still find something to complain about. In this case I say let’s not think small minded. LAX is one of the top 10 busiest airports in North America……in a place like LA to find out that only a little over a one hour drive South of Kelowna is some of the best skiing, best beaches, most awesome wineries in North America is potentially a huge tourism market for Penticton to be able to tap into.

Any Mayor who was NOT at that announcement would have been a narrow minded fool who was not doing their job in resenting Penticton to a very large and potentially very lucrative tourism market. Let’s think big and get over the petty hate on issues. Like Ashton or not he took the time to drive up to Kelowna on crappy roads in order to attend an event that Penticton can benefit from

Funny, we don't see Walter Gray coming down here. Oh ya..he isn't running for any political posts just now. Our mayor should be promoting flying out of Penticton to Vancouver and THEN down to LAX, etc; not using Kelownas airport period. Shop Penticton has always been his motto; or at least what he preaches; maybe he doesnt practice it. It has nothiing to do with dislike or like for anyone; its the track record that is the point here. He needs to keep on the case of Westjet to come here and focus on that and that alone. Ive used Kelowna airport only once; and Penticton many times. I defend those that defend the South Okanagan.

Ashton has promoted the Penticton airport….he has lobbied both WestJet and Air Canada for more service at our airport. However with lots of LA tourists coming to Kelowna on daily flights only a fool would ignore that and not try to capitalize on it. As for your hate on for Ashton it doesn’t bother me at all – just pointing out that you go out of your way to slag the guy in almost every post that I read. There are reasons to slag Ashton like the hockey dorm deal but I submit in this instance Ashton did what a savy mayor should do if a new tourism market can be tapped into. I would be more upset if we had a lazy mayor who did not attend and missed out on the opportunity to promote Penticton as a new and lucrative market is opened up.

Yes, I know he has promoted Penticton airport and I acknolwedged that fact. But I think he should STICK to that thought and let Kelowna deal with their own issues. Walter never came down here helping to celebrate the Govt bringing the new Prison to the South Okanagan..and I suppose you might say that it will benefit the entire Okanagan.(criminals)..lol. There are plenty of ways to get to LAX out of Penticton and Ive done it; actually prefer it. I pride myself as so many do, on shopping local; this is the whole point; not slamming DA.

So you don’t think Penticton should try and encourage LA tourists flying into Kelowna on those direct flights to come down to Penticton and spend money down here? We should just ignore that new market and those related opportunities?

You must be dreaming if you think that we will get many folks from L.A. coming here once they arrive in Kelowna. Other than having nicer beaches here and less traffic, Kelowna has everything that those folks will want. Few will remember the days when we actually had a large sign at the airport - "Penticton International Airport"; it was the first stop before flying even into Kelowna; we even had direct flights to Spokane for a while there. We need to concentrate on getting back direct flights here; not Kelowna. Sure the helicopter school has boomed but little else. "Shop Penticton and Fly out of Penticton" to be pushed and pushed hard.

I think this article explains the opportunities, however, I do agree with XT that sometimes Dan is playing politics too often.

I can assure you that none of this would've even come up, if there wasn't a Provincial Election coming next May. Remember, we are not allowed to attack the person; only their record. (the mods will get you if you do...lol).
ps: sorry that I can't stick around...off to catch a plane here. Taking the family to Disneyland; got a great deal on a seat sale through Air Canada/Jazz. Penticton to Van and then LAX. Not only are we supporting the local economy and jobs, its also more convenient AND supports a truly Canadian owned airline. :127:
