Anyone know what's going in at Uplands Elementary... ?

No sirens ... all appears quiet. (??)

Just heard they kept the kids in because a guy with a knife was spotted in the neighborhood.

Guy with knife ... nahhhh don't think so! Most schools have been holding lockdown practices due to the tragic events in the U.S. ... nothing to worry about. My son's school just had one. Let go of the FEAR!!

Actually... Southy... you are wrong.

Uplands WAS on lockdown today. Police were everywhere up there. Suicidal man yielding a knife.

As a parent I am so thankful for lockdown practices. We never had "lock down drills" when I was in school.

Thanks Scorpion ... I am wrong then! Glad it all worked out well. Yes, I too as a parent am grateful the schools are involving children in learning about lockdowns. Perfect example of why. Thanks again for the correction, I sometimes feel though we as a society instigate fear that isn't there.

Despite what happened at Uplands today, I agree with you on that one. There is a lot of fear, some of it justified, but in general kids are so much safer today than they have probably ever been, if you take everything into account, from hockey helmets to the way society no longer sweeps abuse under the carpet and outs pedofiles rather than moving them to a different school, parish, scout group..., to our incessant driving them around rather than letting them bike/walk, to our awareness about second hand smoke and the list goes on, to them being always on-line with a wireless device.

Of course stuff still goes down, but our fears and our measures to alleviate them have gone a long way to taking a lot of the original cause and reason for the fear away. And still we're afraid... If I see how well the lock down went at Uplands, I would say that parents who were not at the school, had little to be afraid about. Apparently the teachers (kudos to them) had the drill down pat!

Yeah I love the idea of my child being taught how to be a good prisoner.

I'm with you... I don't like lockdown drills.
I know, I know.... just saying that not everybody thinks they're the bee's knee's.
If there is something crazy going in the area and someone attempts to prevent me from entering or my child from leaving the school, there will be a serious debate about procedure.

These drills are to keep your child safe. If there was something going on in the area and your child's school was on lockdown you would not even be able to get close to the school. if you attempted it you'd be stopped by the RCMP (rightly so as you'd be endangering everyone's life and using up valuable resources.)

The school would be locked down because that's currently the safest place for them to be. If something/someone crazy is in/near a school you do not want the kids all let out of the school, and letting the parents pick up the kids is either not practical (extreme example, someone with a gun) or downright impractical. Think of the logistical nightmare ensuring that each kids correct parent is there to pick them up (you don't want just anyone picking them up, again for your kids safety).

Don't be one of those parents screaming at the school officials/police for doing what is best for their child.

you should homeschool then, because I sure as hell can't be alone in being adamant that you STAY THE HELL AWAY during a true lockdown - all you'd do is risk the lives of everyone and waste rcmp resources. try thinking about others, won't you? I sure hope you are not passing this additude to your children.

That being said, i've worked in the school system for years and years, and have been involved in 3 lockdowns. I say THANK GOD we had practiced them and all the children knew the drill and all was calm and ended fine. That is what practice is for. A lockdown is not likely, but NECESSARY to practice. Get over yourself.
