Did he mistake her for someone else, and was that supposed to be some sort of (crass) inside joke?

Have you ever mistaken a stranger with similar hair/clothing/body type for someone you knew? I have & felt silly. I don't even bother any more.

It really is that simple, but some people love drama or dwell on reasons to be offended.

So many of us are nasty? I thought my response was pretty nice actually :) In your original post you stated that you were borderline homicidal, and jumped all over the manager/reception person telling them you would no longer use their company, I would call that nasty. You didn't even give them a chance to look into it. I don't believe for a second that you were reasonable on the phone with that person, your anger comes flowing through in your messages here so I can just imagine how that 'conversation' went.

Of course I was hurt for my daughter hearing that - nobody wants to see their child upset. But the fact of the matter is that they need to learn how to fight their battles. Our jobs as parents is to teach them how to deal with the world while they still live at home, once they're adults you hope like hell you taught them how to function in the world, and ya unfortunately it isn't all rainbows and sunshine. If same situation happened to my daughter and she was that upset, I would suggest she make a complaint with the cab company, if that got no results then I would suggest the Better Business Bureau. I do not think anyone here has an issue with a complaint being made, it was the way it was done, and time for your daughter to grow up and deal with issues and mom to take a backseat.

So, people aren't ALLOWED to get upset at something? Just because it seems silly or not worth someone else's time, energy, etc. means that a person is not entitled to feel something different than another person?

Not everyone can shrug things off so easy, unfortunately. Yes, maybe a day or so later, but in the moment, a person feels how they do, and that is fine. People minimizing another person's feelings, especially in a situation where someone's appearance/size, etc. was commented on in such manner, isn't really helping that person. And no, it isn't always about someone 'playing' the victim. People feel how they do. Saying that it is wrong to feel isn't okay just as much as saying something about how they look is not okay.

So bringing attention to rude and ignorant behaviour is super sensitive?
Bullies and idiots can do what they feel and the rest of us have to tolerate this?

The taxi driver was a rude insensitive lout.
but , after either ignoring it, or a good retort, it only harms the lady to give it more than a second's thought. I would just never use that company's services and tell 15 of my friends (who would be sympathetic) to do the same. I definitely would not look on Castanet for any sympathy or understanding.

No, bringing attention isn't being super sensitive. But the OP actually said the following, which is super sensitive:

"Ok I am fuming mad.............................Actually beyond mad, borderline homicidal."

Being borderline homicidal does not indicate that there would have been a rational conversation with the taxi company lady, regardless of what the OP says now.

I would hope how some people post here isn't indicative of how they actually treat a person face to face or on the phone. Venting out some frustration on a discussion board is certainly different than resolving an issue with a company. The issue was with a driver. Hopefully mother/daughter have dealt with it and moved on.
