Apparently their bites are no worse than a wasp sting. It was really interesting to look at up close and in person, much less creepy than pictures. I can see why people have them as pets.

They look much different from their large, hairy cousins in the southern U.S. One crept out from under the corner of our tent last summer, as we were packing up. (We had set up in the dark. Don't know whether or not it was already there!) It ambled off into the desert, but I'm told they can move quickly if they feel like it.

Good on you for letting her go . I've actually seen those before . Never knew it was a tarantula . I've seen wolf spiders bigger than that . As well as cat spiders . I have a zero spider policy at my house except for jumping spiders and cats .

After thinking about it, it's probably happiest in the wild rather than being in captive. I feel pretty lucky to have seen it, especially since I had no idea they lived around here. I'm glad to have learned.

Could you post a photo of this little critter please..TY.

There's a link in the first line of the first post.

Is that a immature bug, as it has little to no hair on it? If anyone knows respond. It looks cool.

The link that accompanies it from BC Mag has some more details. No hair. It's a "tarantuloid" (sp?) as opposed to a true tarantula. Close relative, just as creepy.
So I love the Okanagan but it's a place best enjoyed from atop a very large pile of $100 bills. - Spocky

I freakin' hate spiders. We had friends that had one under their porch last year ... kids caught it and released it in the forest. Rotten kids! LOL!

I got into my car this afternoon and reached down and felt something kind of spiny and relatively large on my dress. Instinctively I freaked out a bit and brushed it off. It honestly felt a lot like a regular old bur...but I couldn't for the life of me find whatever this thing was anywhere in my car.

My first thought was "OH MY GOD TARANTULA!"

Thanks for this post...I trust nothing now.

LOL I'm going to be bug hunting for taking macro photos soon. I've found some neat looking spiders up on the High Rim Trail & Angel Springs.
