I'd love if we could keep him in the country and instead send some of the posters here to Timbaktu. We'd be better off for sure.

Come to Canada legally and you don't have to risk paying the fiddler when you get caught for coming illegally. Mr. Fuhr ought to be treading lightly as he learns the ropes rather than jumping in with both feet, and in doing so [at least to some extent] putting the feet of the Minister of Immigration to the fire. Pounding on the door of the newly elected MP, a day or so before the deportation date, seems too late to be expecting a stay of the deportation order.

Re: Deportation deferred
There is often more to a story that hits the media. But in general, when someone who is not a citizen is convicted of a major crime, deportation to their country of origin should be automatic.
If we ask the right questions we can change the world with the right answers

Re: Deportation deferred
The situation certainly identifies the difficulty of getting rid of unwanted people once they get into Canada. Even convicted terrorists could not be deported under the extradition system unless the country they are being deported to promises not to give them the death penalty ... because there is no death penalty in Canada for terrorism
The same goes for murderers.
It is obvious that, given his "moves" since he arrived he has been well schooled in what is required to make it very difficult to deport him. I wonder if he declared his conviction when he arrived and kept immigration aware of his location and situation ??

All he did was extend the deportation date and ensure the proper minister reviewed the file. That is exactly what I would expect him to do in this case - nothing more nothing less.

The guy has played every game possible to "beat the Immigration system".
Rest assured that there is a lawyer behind every step taken to "beat the system".
Approaching the new MP two days before his deportation date is simply the latest "beat the system" move.
