Okay Glacier - my friend kbens and I were talking about how it feels more humid this year, we especially notice at zumba!

I read that blog you linked about humidex and stuff, and it is quite beyond me. Got something for me in layman's terms?

It is definitely getting more humid. The important thing to look at is the dewpoint temperature. Kelowna is currently at 11C for the dewpoint. That means that there's so much moisture in the air that if the temperature dropped to 11C, the relative humidity would be 100%.

Also, Environment Canada says Kelowna has a temperature of 29 (at 12pm) and a humidex of 31. That's supposed to mean it "feels like" 31. The humidex is not an exact science, so depending on the activity you're doing, it make feel warmer or colder.

Now, let's compare Kelowna to some other places in the valley. Osoyoos is all 11C for the dew point, but Penticton (because it's closer to the lake is at 12C). This means it's going to feel more muggy there (slightly).

How about outside the valley? Well Kamloops has a dew point of 7C. That's much drier so new humidex. Ashcroft is much, much drier than Kamloops, hence the dew point of 0.5C! This gives a relative humidity of 12%, which is very, very low. Kelowna is at 33%.

Now, just because Ashcroft is much drier than Kamloops which is much drier than Kelowna, that doesn't mean it's always less humid. There is humid air pushing into the Okanagan, and hasn't pushed that far west. Sometimes it might hit more west, but it's almost never the case to have a higher dewpoint in Kelowna (or even Osoyoos) than Ashcroft.

Here's something interesting. Clearwater has a lower dewpoint than Kamloops at the moment, but that's usually not the case.

Does that answer the question?

Some rain clouds popping up. Not sure if we're going to get any.
The radar is picking up smoke from the Ashcroft fire, just above the kamloops text.

The hottest place in Canada is north of Kamloops.

We were out on the deck, drinking beer, and it did "rain". As in, about 10 drops per second per acre for 10 minutes.

I'm inside now because I broke the seal & need some food. :130:
