Hi Castanet,

I was hoping you might be able to help me with a project I have going on. I am trying to collect “marker” words that invoke a thought of your city through quick 1 or 2 word sayings. The idea is that when you hear this word, you either immediately or with a little thought if they are a more ambiguous think of the city or town they relate to. Generally this is best exhibited in people who are local to the city/town.

An example for a direct evoking mark for the thought of Kelowna would be: “Knox Mountain” or “The Sails”
An example for an indirect/ambiguous mark for Kelowna would be: “The Apple” or “Bernard”

I am hoping to expand this not just for Kelowna, but to the cities and towns of the Okanagan. So that if someone said “The Peach” for example, they might think of Penticton.

So please feel free to reply with marker words for places outside of Kelowna, as long as they are in the Okanagan.

If the marker word you think of has already been mentioned, that is fine, the more responses I get, the better correlational data I can create.

When you reply, if you can please let me know what City that marker word is for as well, i would appreciate it.

DYMO is a word i see written in marker and paint all over town.

Wine Country is one that comes to mind.

And you can't go a few miles without tripping over a golf course so Golf would be on the list.

Cliquey - unfortunately.

In many ways, Kelowna is both Small Town trying to be Big Town and conversely is Big Town wanting to remain Small Town; a curious dichotomy.

If you take Castanet as a microcosm of the Valley, a good marker word would be "Vocal"
