We're pretty much maxed out on cuteness here these days! Probably half the babies in the Instagram pictures are offspring of the bush chickens. One of the yellow ones has SUCH feathery little legs we called her Socks.

It's -20 here this morning and we are entering Day 2 of being coop bound. I fling treats over their deep bedding so they can dig and have something to do, but sooner or later a case of the bickersons is going to break out. Apparently things are supposed to warm up by Monday.
It's pointless right now to open the coop door and let their little bit of ambient heat escape and have no one decide to go outside.

So long as chickens have deep dry litter in the coop and water to drink and lots of food (appropriate for their age and purpose) they will be just FINE in -20C and below weather. Opened the door in the morning and they pretty well all went out during the day but roosted up as usual. Been there, done that. Keep heat lamps and heaters out of the chicken house!!

I did spoil mine a bit here and there by giving them their scratch in the am and pm as 'porridge' I cooked on the stove and cooled down to warm tho.....

Also, if your coop is relatively air tight and you see frost forming on the inside walls, you need more ventilation. Open the door during the day and crack a window at night to keep the air drier....

Heaters went OFF today, which means I get to start sleeping at night again. Someone needs to come up with a safer way to warm livestock spaces.
The bush chickens haven't been outside in DAYS despite their door being left open for several hours each day. It's almost like they're saying "Thanks, but we've lived rough once, don't care to do it again." Not even a generous sprinkle of popcorn outside the door of their house will compel them to come out.

Poor babies must be afraid of being abandoned again . . .

How is the one with the bum leg?

She's all better. The cold weather and confinement seemed to help.

I'm really glad to hear that! Hey, do you have cats? If so, how do your cats and chickens get on?
