KGH Parking

I've found myself having to spend a huge amount of time at KGH lately and I find myself exasperated over the parking.

Most especially for those going into emergency. If the lot beside emerg is full and you have a loved one who needs you, you're

hooped. The temp slots beside the ER entrance always seem to be full.

One of the problems, which I'm sure some will not simpathize with is that I'm trying to park a truck.

The spaces are designed for compact cars and I've been ticketed if one of the Parking Police decides that my truck not fitting

between the white lines is an infraction. The straight on Parking slots are particularly tight. The angle not quite so bad.

The other piece that twists my knickers are the Parking Police.

Before I get on that tangent what say you Forum Friends?

If you can't fit a vehicle within the white lines, you suck at parking, I'm sorry.

Also, if your loved one is in emergency room, and the parkade is full you're not really "hooped". All you have to do is to *gasp* walk 2 or 3 blocks.

parking spots are designed for little cars not full size trucks, and if you think you can park two or three blocks from the hospital good luck, if you do get lucky and find somewhere you can park there will be a one or two hour limit and anyone who has spent some time in emerg knows you wont even get looked at in two hours

I'd agree that the parking at KGH is frustrating. I recently had to go to emerg with a client, and we were there for 9 hours before he got admitted. Even though I had gotten a parking spot in the emerg parking lot, it is max 4 hours. So once those were up I had to leave and move. I ended up having to park a couple blocks away, but even with that the street parking is only 1-2 hour parking. So I had to continue to go out and move my car. Every time I went out to move my car I saw parking lot and bylaw workers in the parking lot and on the street giving tickets. They are very efficient!

The house my client works at is about 5 blocks away from the hospital and that street even has 2 hr parking. And before anyone says anything, I would have parked at his house but he was in no condition to walk or wait, and with being unsure if he was going to be admitted or not I didn't want to park that far away.

Now, while it is frustrating I am sure I could have found parking in the parkade etc, but I didn't feel comfortable leaving him alone for long periods of time while I drove around looking for a spot. While I understand it is frustrating, I also understand that I am not the only one needing to park to go to the hospital, or that the people living downtown don't want people clogging up the parking in front of their homes. So I'll continue to be frustrated and try than remind myself to be humble.

Some streets do, some streets don't. I've parked on Richter near the park at Richter and Rose intersection, it had no limits on parking. It's 2 or 3 blocks away, and I walked it in no time for my follow up visits with a surgeon.

well that's great but not feasible for everyone either way the parking situation there is pisspoor at best they don't even provide adequate parking for their own employees, they continue to add onto the existing hospital when in reality they should have looked at adding a second one at the other end of town or on the westside as the current location has outgrown its space.

My boyfriend used to live by there, and I had to always park there as their rental had limited parking.

In the morning the nurses would be lined up waiting for residential parkers to pull away so they can stag those spots, as it is literally one of the only stretches that doesn't have a limit. Luckily you've been able to get spots but I would never rely on those spots being open personally.

I do this too. If one is mobile and has the time it's definitely way less of a headache to park like 10 minutes away.

Now that doesn't make sense. I'm not paying a fee to take someone to emergency with a fracture if it's not life threatening.

Did you know there are only 4 ambulances in Kelowna? There is 1 in Lake Country, a couple in Westbank and 1 in Peachland they can use if the other 4 are being used, but that's it!

Please don't use the ambulance if it isn't an emergency.

The parking lots are leased out to Impark. They are the parking lot police. The collect the revenues and issue the tickets. All of the money goes to Impark. It is a huge source of income to Impark and they will ticket and fine as many as they can, knowing full well that 85% will pay the fine and not dispute the ticket.

Does not solve the lack of visitor parking at KGH, IH seriously f :cuss: ed up by not having more levels on both visitor & employee parkades when built.
Apparently IH does not give a damn... as well the Province. I'm not fan of the company in charge of parking at all the hospitals in BC as well across most of Canada.

That location for the hospital made sense back in the 50's and 60's when it was first built... today, it should be located elsewhere, away from the waterfront and someplace where parking (among other expansion issues) will not be a problem. But its too late for that now, someone should have thought of that 30-35 years ago... hindsight is 20-20 I guess. Parking will always be an issue in its current location, and will only get worse as time goes on.

I totally agree KGH should have been built in different location, once the Royal tower was being designed back in the mid 80s.
I knew KGH was not moving and now with the amount of money spent in last 5 years, it's not going anywhere.
The next step will be having a hospital built in the West Kelowna area, don't hold your breath waiting.
