Kelowna: City buys Carney Pond
The city of Kelowna has purchased this phenomenal property:

The city also purchased the Golf Course on Bulman Road across the Hwy from this property, this gives them carte blanche in this fast growing area. This property gives direct access to John Hindle Drive.

The City of Kelowna has forked over $11 million for 140 acres of property on Highway 97N.
The property is situated on either side of the highway, near the airport.
A news release from the city suggests the land is home to several natural features, most notably, Carney Pond and surrounding wetlands.
“As our city continues to grow, large parcels of land give us the flexibility to meet future community needs,” said Mayor Colin Basran.
“The property is close to the university campus, the city landfill and the international airport and has features that could help with flood protection.”
The city maintains key parcels of land such as this helps to balance the needs of the community with both environmental protection and agricultural opportunities.
“The city is committed to working with the Agricultural Land Commission to identify opportunities to improve agriculture as outlined in the city’s Agricultural Plan,” said director of strategic investments Derek Edstrom.
“The land in this case could also create new public spaces, fulfill civic needs, provide drainage solutions for nearby creeks and facilitate key transportation networks including connections for Hollywood Road North and the Central Okanagan Multi-Modal Corridor.”
The city utilized reserve fund for the acquisition. There is no direct impact on taxation.

Great place to house the homeless and they will have all the water to keep cool that they need plus it's on a bus route.
Solves both the flooding and the homeless problems all in one shot.

Darn, I wanted to buy that land ! Been looking at it for a few years now as the
land I wanted to purchase.
I just couldn't funnel monies from other peoples pockets to build up
the reserves to do so.

honestly the sooner it gets developed the better.its just a matter of time before they end up setting the bone dry hay field on fire and taking the whole hillside and university with it

Shadow Ridge Golf Course was purchased for future expansion of the airport.

Any guarantee that it will be only airport related?

That's actually cheap, when you consider that at Lakestone, a lot is around $300K and that's for a lot less than an acre.
I believe some of the lots are much higher than that too.

Quite. $500k for 0.2 acre. With a view of rooftops and having to listen to your neighbours farting. Quite the bargain (lol).
CoK will make a mint when they sell off portions to developers.

Re: Kelowna: City buys Carney Pond
This is the land that would be IMO perfect for my sustainable estate.
I've dreamed of it for several years now.
That little knoll you see from the UBCO Flyover as the "spot"
https://www.gardenvisit.com/blog/wp-con ... 68c8_o.jpg
The rest of the land retained for it's intended purpose, farming grains and ground crops.
Oh well, moving on....

Lakestone is 550 acres and the developer only paid 16 million for it as it went bankrupt after 2008 crash.
Most of it has amazing views of the lake and it is not in the alr. Totally different.
It seems very expensive to me but the actual purchase makes sense just not the price.
