Wine Trail to Truck Route

Post by inquisitive »

This West Kelowna city proposal should never have seen the light of day. How many costly hours of work went into this legitimate study that went so far off the rails, big time, ending with outrageous recommendations?
If Mayor Findlater is (alledgedly) so concerned about trade and commerce why did he come across supporting the trucking trade whilst not taking a more fair look at the whole situation and also pronounce on the most huge segment of our region, namely tourism for one of many, relative to the same study?

Perhaps because people need real jobs. We need industry and commerce.

The minimum wage/seasonal/part time/itinerant nature of the tourist industry is a joke. Plus it adds more fuel to the fire of a seasonal influx of rude, ignorant visitors. Pests. Noisy oafs. Fire starters.

Having lived on the wine trail for a number of years since about 2005 I am quite familiar with the vehicle patterns. The usage by commercial and construction vehicles has noticeably increased year over year.
If I have to state the obvious then, yes, it is necessary for commercial and other heavy transport vehicles to use the wine trail in order to conduct their legitimate business.
No matter what restrictions or usage designations are decreed for truck routes there will be those (in great numbers) who will flout them all. Policing and prosecuting infractions on such a scale is impractical.
Time-saving appears to be the major factor in truckers' selection of the wine trail over Highway 97 and so perhaps some consideration (or even a study, ha! ha?) could be given by, on a test basis, having provided sufficient notice to the driving public by (a) setting up electronic traffic counters and collecting data before and after the proposed tests and then (b)simply covering up all speed-limit signage depicting more than 30kph. on Gellatly and Boucherie.
( No! Truckers could not be identified by this test. of course......but.) Decisions based upon the results of this test would then become a practicality.
(It's hard to believe that it took so long for this truck route proposal to come before council and the public this month - arising from a valid 2015 complaint, we are told, by residents living in Canyon Meadows. It in no way ameliorates the situation for these tax-payers after a two-year wait.)

er 30kph with a bag
