So apparently you can take pictures of CHILDREN while you are in a position of TRUST and only get two years prison for ruining their lives. weak - I hope this guy drops the soap pretty regularly and the rest of the prisoners take care of him

Disgusting, isn't it? Two years plus probation? And parole after what, about 6 months?! Yeah, that'll fix everything. Put him in general population and let HIM be preyed upon.

After the charges were laid, Despotas’ coaching certificate was suspended by Gymnastics BC.
He sold his Kelowna condo and his bail conditions included a directive to reside with his mother in Toronto.
Despotas was also ordered to have no contact of any kind with children who appear to be under 16 years old, to not access the internet at any time and to not possess any electronic device capable of taking photographs.
Despotas has pleaded guilty to making or publishing child pornography and possessing the illegal images.
He returns to Kelowna court June 8th when a date may be set for sentencing.

But he came to police attention after the breakup of a child pornography ring in Ontario in 2012. Some of the files were eventually traced to Despotas, and Kelowna police began investigating him in 2015.

Seems like a sport like women's gymnastics would be a magnet for pervs. I'm really surprised they don't check these coaches out under an electron microscope to make sure they are absolutely squeaky clean.

if you work with youth you are required to get a criminal record check. Privacy rules don't allow ones home computer etc to be searched unless there is a warrant
you get these people a lot in cubs/scouts as well. It is rife with pervs

What would you look for? Unless he has prior convictions or run-ins with the law, what are hoping to reveal?

sorry not how it works-sad but true, he will be put in pc with the same kind of offenders and be just fine

If this fellow makes nice, takes whatever programs are recommended, and behaves himself, he'll be out in less than a year.

I'd tend to agree. If we let ourselves think of sex offenders as people with an impulse they can't control (similar to an addiction), depending on the type of things they're hearing in a program, they could very easily be triggered, and develop whole new obsessions.
I think treatment *can* work, but like other forms of compulsive behaviour, it's really difficult to overturn, even if the person in treatment genuinely wants to get better. For sexual compulsions, I doubt prison is the best place for recovery to happen.
