I find it curious that New Zealand DLs don't identify the gender of the holder... regardless of M,F or X, but no indication of any gender, neutral or otherwise.

There always was until recently.

Male or Female? Problem solved.

Too easy.

Move along. Nothing to see here...

What about people who aren't? Biologically, scientifically, there are far more than 2 sexes, even if most are extremely rare. The Male/Female binary is imprecise and it makes far more sense to just remove it from documents where it is not absolutely necessary and in those cases allow for a variety of options to be more precise.

Of course, "gender" and "sex" are two different things and while the words are somewhat interchangeable in meaning, one should be careful to not use "gender" when one means biological "sex" to avoid confusion. There should be absolutely no need to specify gender in it's distinct meaning on an official identification document.

I love comments like this ...

“It’s just not a good way to treat tourists,” she said. “When you come in legally on your passport and you’re flying domestically, it doesn’t say you need a passport.”

and then they go around and say ...

Sharon Duley is a frequent traveler

As a frequent traveller, one knows that your passport is your number one piece of ID even after you have gone through customs and entered the country - especially when travelling through airports, even domestically. And this shows that many countries will not accept foreign DLs as valid ID for whatever reason. Even many hotels are passport only.

I get it, once in a while one gets a brain fart and forgets it or something, we're all human and we've done it. But to plead ignorance on another countries requirements and trying to playing the tourist victim card is just silly.

She did a quick search on the airline website and learned that all needed to fly was valid government issued, photo ID.

Should have read:
"She did a quick search on the airline website and missed the fact that gender on the ID is a requirement"

Googling this:
Westjet id requirements
Brought up this:
WestJet accepts the following pieces of valid (not expired) photo ID – that includes name, date of birth and gender - for boarding: Alberta Registries - Identification Card. BC Enhanced Identity Card, BCID, BC Services Card. Canadian Certificate of Identity.

Still puzzled with the gender part. She was probably hoping going public would score her a free trip anywhere WestJet travels, I'd have just kept quiet as it does appear she failed to do her homework.

Ask Transport Canada - its their requirement, not the airlines.
