The Journey Home

Post by hupur »

I don't agree with any of this crap.If the Homeless are mot from here give them a bus ticket home.If they are from here and have mental health issues ,get them off the street into a mental health facility. If the excuse is they are all full, then take all the money we are going to throw away on some apartment building in Rutland that will do nothing but cause more harm to the area than has already been done by allowing the homeless to camp in nearby bushes. You are not going to solve the problem by being namby pamby. The Homeless movement is growing larger everyday and unfortunately with our mild winters we attract more than our fair share of them.Is this is the kind of community you want to raise your kids in ,where you cant safely walk the streets at night and have to lock up every dam thing or its stolen or slept in?I know I'm sick of it.They made a bylaw where you cant panhandle on the medians.Well everyday at 97 and pandosy there's some woman panhandling..whats the point of the bylaw..so the politicians can say we tried that..BS.Clear out the camps like they have done in Vernon and other places and send them back from where they came.

I agree. How many of the homeless and homeless criminal junkies are actually from this community or have at least contributed to it in a positive fashion? The "journey home" should include a bus ticket if home if these folks are coming from elsewhere.

Hmmm . . . sound like you would rather just cull them. Seems to be the Kelowna way for anything that dares to annoy our privileged lifestyle.

the op has a partial point....in that if someone is not from here and just showed up one day without ever contributing to the local community why should they stay.....

Solving Kelowna's homeless problem is an important issue for local survey respondents.

The Journey Home Task Force updated Kelowna city council on Monday, including results from recent public consultation.

More than 1,697 contacts with community members were made and more than 500 responses received between Feb. 7 and March 18. Among the findings:

79 per cent of respondents felt that solving the issue of homelessness in Kelowna is very important, an additional 17 per cent believe it to be somewhat important.
52 per cent, were satisfied with the current efforts to address homelessness, 32 per cent indicated that they were dissatisfied.
85 per cent of respondents indicated that they believe homelessness is on the rise in Kelowna; another 10 per cent indicated that they believe it has stayed the same.
There was strong belief that measures such as "housing first" and long-term supportive housing could improve the situation.

“Engagement is a crucial piece in the development of our strategy to address homelessness and the level of interest and passion from the community over the last few months has been inspiring,” said task force co-chair Martin Bell.

“Homelessness is a complex issue that cannot be solved by any one group. The engagement process has brought together many different sectors, that are essential in finding tangible and collaborative solutions.”

"Design labs" following a community summit in January focused on creating made-in Kelowna solutions on topics such as mental health, addictions, technology, affordable housing, public education and understanding.

Seeking input from those who have experienced homelessness, a "Lived Experience Circle" has so far heard more than 100 voices.

“This is critical to truly understand the kind of barriers they’re facing, as well as what is currently working in the community, and what else could be done," said co-chair Dr. Kyleen Myrah.

Journey Home Strategy development will continue in coming months, with a draft plan to be presented to council in June.
