It's been a couple of years since I was in the travel business but I can recall super cheap blowout airfares (99.00 to Puerto Vallarta, etc) but the taxes and fuel surcharges were close to 300.00. I would imagine that's what's going on.
Actually, flying Air Canada out of Penticton, on a return airfare, I haven't had any fuel surcharges in a long time. Yes to a Security fee ($14.25), Canada Airports fee ($5) and HST. .........But no Fuel surcharge and no Airport Improvement fee (at Penticton Regional).

No AIF for Penticton? Have they improved anything lately? I'm afraid the viability of our airport is getting rather dubious and can see the day when we lose it. If Transport Canada pulls out it would likely revert back to the PIB and then.......

What are you talking about? It has nothing to do with prejudice. It was historically PIB lands and my understanding is that if it is not a Federally operated airport the lands revert back. I simply pose then what? Would it simply be run as a local airport by the band? Would it be viable given the poor history of leasing revenue? Would it just be torn down? Perhaps it is you stirring some pot here!!

twobits. I personally know people who would not be alive today if it were not for the Air Ambulance taking those people from Penticton Regional Airport to Vancouver. The PIB has also used the Air Ambulance, to save essential time needed to convey patients for specialized care. I see the air ambulance go in and out of Penticton Regional Airport sometimes a few times a day and in the middle of the night.
Also, perhaps Penticton would have ended up looking like Slave Lake, had it not been for Penticton Regional Airport water bomber base being nearby, to help put out the fire. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tqZbA9qVZU It has also been an emergency back-up for other airports and saved at least one large plane.
We all, have a vested interest in Penticton Regional Airport staying and being fully maintained.

Canadian Heli is doing a large expansion over the next couple of years so airport is here to stay. Also Transport has to keep this airport until it is taken over by a Competent operator. Very few Transport run airports are left in BC and all have a similar issue. Guess what that is. It would be nice to have the "issues" settled and to get Transport out of there but I fear I will be retired by then and really won't care. At that time I guess I'll join all the others hanging out a Cherry Lane and bitch about the prison or whatever else there is to complain about.
Why use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice.

I absolutely agree. I hope you didn't get the impression that I would like to see it disappear! I'm just very concerned about it's viability and the Feds willingness to continually subsidize it to the extent they do now. Re Canadian Helecopters expansion.....great news for sure but that in itself will not support full airport operations I don't think. Being helecopters, do they even need the runway/airport for their operations? I just look at the seemingly continual reduction in commercial schedules, recent closure of the flight school, and recent high profile loss of a tenant to the Oliver airport because of lack of servicing and unreasonable lease demands and it gives me pause for concern. I will also point out knowing fully I will be told to "get over it" that the airport would have recieved a huge shot in the arm that a correctional facility here would have provided in passenger numbers. Think lawyers and visiting family. But let's not get into a debate over this simple observation ok. I guess the important question for me is could Transport Canada just pull the plug on it if a suitable operator is never found? I think the city looked at it but the numbers were scary. Anyone out there close to the subject?
