Economic Development & Tourism Contracts

Postby DblDwn11 » Nov 2nd, 2011, 11:27 am

Finally a new and fresh approach new running these two important offices! It has been common knowledge that the Chamber board has been dysfunctional for quite some time.

I can't wait to see what this new group will do!

I fully agree with you. I now hope that the two individuals who have been the cause of the downfall of the Penticton Chamber DO NOT get elected onto either council or school board respectively.

If I was a member of the Chamber, I would be questioning why I'm paying so much for what is now bascially a business networking group. Got to be a cheaper way to network!

I can't see the fees going down -- they now have to find a new office/board room etc....

I think the entire board should resign prior to their AGM, especially the two 'candidates' -- get some new blood in there and re-focus.

That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Anyone else see conflict with this? The President of the OHA and OHS is also involved with the Penticton Business Development Group (PBDG) as their "spokesperson." So the city sold a piece of PUBLIC property to the OHA last week, and this week awards a huge contract to the same ties?

Wow... it's not what you know, it's who you know. I am so tired of paying higher taxes and rates for everything in this city, to be left feeling that there are certain Pentictonites who will prosper while the rest struggle to keep their heads above water.

Tero, I think you are reading a whole lot into this that just isn't there. IMO, and that of many others, the Chamber not getting the contract is a good thing. I can't see any impropriety here when I look at the timing of the land deal being brought forward to council and the receipt of SEALED TENDERS for the ED&T contract.

I don’t know that any media information has reported that the OHS is related to the “unnamed” company that is looking to purchase the property in question. I would be careful throwing out an accusation that an individual is in a conflict of interest unless you have some personal factual evidence that would confirm your accusation.

Personally I remain disappointed that the City has not disclosed who the purchaser/developer is and I believe this is a mistake on the part of the City administration but that is just a personal opinion on my part.

If we review the curent info and think about this I think we could have the answer to the current non disclosure. Given we still have to go thru a public hearing process, there is at this point no sale completed. This could still get turned down and the buyer has no obligation to reveal himself. The city would also have to respect that wish if requested. If the sale does go thru, it will be a matter of public record in the land titles office. Any thoughts on my speculation that Dave Kampe might be involved in this as another philanthropic gesture?

After living here for twenty years, there's something I know for sure... this city if full of back scratching dirty deals.

And it's not accusation, it's theory and suspicion, just to be clear.

Don't know if she still is on the association's board, but Barb Schneiderat, Cary's mom, definitely has a reputation around town and has always been in with the chamber and the hospitality association. It stands to reason that she would come out fighting if her boy was slighted.

Headline in this morning's Herald: "Penticton Business group Dissolves". Less than eight weeks into their contract the new Penticton Business Development Group has folded, citing an inability to come to terms with the Penticton Hospitality Association, a group of local hotel and motel operators.

Nothing up on the Herald's site yet, but you can find more details here:
http://www.pentictonwesternnews.com/news/140232733.html

The dispute appears to be centered around the control of funds collected through the 2% hotel room tax collected by local hoteliers and earmarked to fund tourism promotion, funds which can amount to as much as $450K annually.
