Re: WestJet
Part of the area that was selected for the war-time airport was owned by the Indian band, and was thus expropriated in 1939. The fact that it was expropriated for use during the war is likey the reason that there is continued confusion over ownership to this day. Or is there? Perhaps that issue has been resolved ... and we are good to go with getting WestJet in to Penticton.

Re: WestJet
It wasn't that many years ago that the Feds were going to transfer the airport to the City; then the confusion over ownership began; haven't heard that it was ever legally sorted out. Re bringing in Westjet...present ownership shouldn't have anything to do with that; Air Canada/Jazz has been doing just fine here as things stand now. I doubt the PIB would oppose WJ coming in.

Actually, you are right XT225 ... the PIB wouldn't be opposed to WJ coming in to the Penticton airport. No need for raising concerns that aren't even there.

You bet, GM....lets just get em here and get er done. If WJ decides not to come in, then we should lobby AC/Jazz to provide at least one more trip to YVR and something Eastbound as well.

If the Penticton market demanded more flights, airlines would already be servicing it. The demand is not there and the "if you build it they will come" mantra does not work.

It's not known if additional flights to YVR can be justified (unless you have stats), which likely none of us do. It sounds like a reasonable assumption though, since most flights to Van that Ive been on were nearly always FULL. We also do not know how many people travel to Kelowna to catch a flight that might have more convenient times to the coast. One would have to set up a poll at the YLW airport somehow. I dont think ANYone would deny that there is a big demand for flights EASTward out of Penticton, however. Whoever can supply that need is welcome. We must remain positive here and focused.

That is true. It would be interesting to find out. When I lived in Penticton and was flying somewhere other than Vancouver I would always go via KLO because I hate AC.

Re: WestJet
I recall the newspaper saying some time ago, that Pacific Coastal had 20,000 per year and that AC's numbers remained the same, indicating that many of their passengers went to Alta. That is a quite lot, considering they didn't have good terminal connections in Cal or Van, didn't connect to another airline and used a smallish aircraft (plus two bad PR crashes) .
If a Van-Pent-Alta service were added today, using the North Terminal at Van, the main terminal in Cal or Edm and were part of a major airline system such as AC or WJ, they may well have something workable.
The dirve to the Kel airport from Pent is a non-starter for me. The highway is unreliable, as there is no way around if there is any sort of blockage, also often poorly maintaintained in the winter. It is often congested and 1 hr 23 min, driving the speed limit. i'd rather drive to Van, than deal with Kel, for the added time it takes to drive to Van and at least have a car there. Flying from Pent is the best for me and the Alta connection would be great for anyone heading there. I know of people working in Alta and living in Pent and likely more would do the same if there was a flight.

Now that the city is hiring a new economic development officer, I wonder where that leaves the current projects being handled by that office. Such as the proposal to WestJet.......

The city funded the contract thus owns the work. It will just be picked up by the new position. I would be surprised if David is not the selected candidate so it should be a seamless transition.

I can't imagine any ecoomic development office not picking up on this important WestJet issue - but there will surely be a pause during transition. And I'm not so sure David thinks he'll be the selected candidate, as the Herald reported that he was seeking legal advice.

I don't think this will have any influence on Westjet's decision; they likely won't even know about this, nor care. However, there is something oddly "non-transparent" about Mr. Arsenaults leaving and the fact that he is seeking legal advice.
