Couple months ago a guy was admitted to the hospitol after breaking his neck quading, sadly making him a quadriplegic. Not that quads making quads is anything new but this guy happened to be a paraplegic at the time due to a prior motor bike accident. He said it wasn't much different than using a wheelchair, until it rolled on him of course. No moral to this story except I do accept that some paraplegics do use quad's to enjoy the backcountry.

Do you have major mobility issues, is this why you're so adamant that you need help getting around?

I can get around just fine, but just because I can doesn't mean others should be banned from seeing what I see. I have a friend who is a paraplegic that loves to hunt and fish and camp, and has his truck modified so that he can enjoy these areas. There's no reason that he should be restricted from the KVR or any other area.

Stay off the KVR, ya freakin' yahoos.
There's more than enough fire roads and ATV trails above Naramata to get your inner red neck on.

Hell... I find your empty shotgun shells all over the place.

The fire roads are already in a motor vehicle closure area.

Banning access to people with mobility challenges for your own, selfish motives is extremely offensive. Categorizing people as "rednecks" that want to access Crown land shows the exclusion proponents for what they are, self-entitled snobs.

What an ignorant post. I own an ATV and I do no leave shotgun shells laying around as I'm not a hunter. Prefer slow, relaxing riding on the trails (I'm in no shape to ride a bike or walk that far). Generalizing that all ATV'ers are bad just shows your ignorance. That would be like my saying that all cyclists wreck the trails by littering. Thats just ignorant. If everyone is responsible, there is room for all on those trails.

So now you're riding around on the coattails of the handicapped. Maybe there should be handicap decal for them and a bumper sticker for you that reads "4X4 lounger."

I had mentioned on a previous post that I would try and contact both Dan Ashton and Dick Cannings and get their view on the KVR issue. Well easier said than done. First off, I'm not about to call one of these gentlemen at home. So I thought if I contacted both provincial parties that they are representing that surely they would give me contact information. Well, the Liberal Party emailed me back and said they had no contact information for Mr. Ashton. (This could be because he is still Mayor of Penticton and Chair of the RDOS) but you would think the Liberals would want him to be available to the public. But not to be. I also didn't feel right contacting Dan at City Hall or the RDOS office. In thinking about it it really is kind of difficult for him to be vocal on the KVR issue at this time because what voice is he using ... City Hall, RDOS or Liberal Party of BC?
The NDP were very prompt and replied with DIck Cannings email address. I plan on emailing him tonight to get his views and we'll see if he responds. So to some who think I have not made an attempt to contact these two individuals .. this is where it stands. Hopefully, I will have more information in the near future.

Still haven't figured a way to contact Dan Ashton other than calling him as Mayor or RDOS Chair. Not going to call him at home as some would suggest. Need to keep it professional. However, I have received a reply from Dick Cannings and as a matter of fact it was a rather quick response to my email. He says ... that I am not the first to contact him with regard to the KVR and ATV's. He also feels that the pilot study on this topic that the government has done over the lat year is a good way to tackle this problem due to the differing views out there. Also stated that the study was a very reasonable solution that would keep most people happy. He is ok (as outlined in the plan) with ATV access to the KVR on certain sections that allow access to selected sites and trails, but would be opposed to ATV and dirt bike access to the entire trail. He doesn't know of any official NDP stance on this topic. I appreciate his honesty and the fact he took time to respond. Says a lot.

I'm still wondering why the Liberal Party would say they have no contact information for Dan? Perhaps it has to do with Bill B. still being MLA.

Glad that Mr. Cannings got back to you so quickly, Southy. Doesnt surprise me; he appears like a friendly, approachable fellow with no set agenda. Re the KVR plan, I wouldnt be opposed to banning motorized vehicles on certain sections if there were alternative ways for EVERYone to get to the important areas (ie: both tunnels). I doubt Dan will take a stand on it, though one would think that he would; someone mentioned that he owns a quad., but he likely doesnt want to take a chance on losing any votes. ps: I notice that Mr. Cannings is quite active on FB (and popular). Haven't been able to find Dan on there though; a bit too shy I guess.

Leave the KVR open for all users.
I am not an ATV rider, but I do support all using this great trail system. Its been working fine for years so leave it.
People actually travel here to ride, drive, walk etc. this trail system. Its great for the economy along its route.
Time to get along. Everyone is irritated by someone or something. Horses that leave there mess right in the middle of the trail. ATV's that make noise. Hikers that drive up in an ford expedition and complain about others polluting.
Point is, it isn't going to hurt you to share with all the rest.

Good comments, Zoo. I agree completely. I see horses making messes up there and bicycle tires chew up the trail far worse than an ATV or Car tire will (thats a fact); yet I dont complain; figure everyone has a right to the KVR. Share and share alike.

Some northern states have actually put together a state cross country dual sport ride that attracts tourist for the cause. I have down 2 of them. Washington state discovery route and "tour of Idaho". Both very awesome and these goverment supported rides have brought thousands of tourism in.
BC is missing the boat totally and need to get back into the tourism business. Not everyone wants to drive a car around from big city to the next one.
