Thieves rob boys and girls club

Jennifer Anderson is shocked someone would rob the Boys and Girls Club.Workers at the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs in Penticton are still in shock following a weekend break-in and robbery.

They are missing several important items including cell phones and a van used for transportation. The theft is also a financial burden.

“I can’t believe someone would break into the boys and girls club and drive off with our vehicle,” said area director Jennifer Anderson. “To steal from any nonprofit is unbelievable in my mind.”

According to Anderson, she received a call from the club’s alarm company that the alarm was sounded around 8 a.m. on Saturday.

The police were called and arrived on the scene. As they were checking the exterior of the building on Manitoba Street they saw a male running out of the side, carrying a large duffle bag. He jumped into the driver’s side of the nonprofit’s blue Ford mini-van and left the scene.

She said she was told at the time, that the RCMP were unable to chase the vehicle because it was not a life threatening situation.

Losing the van, which has club logos on both sides, is the greatest hardship. It is used to transport kids in the after school program and gives staff who aren’t licensed to drive larger vans some flexibility.

The duffle bag that was taken contained water, granola bars, tools, a flashlight and wind up radio. The thief dumped out the water to make the bag lighter.

In total, three cell phones, the children’ computer used in the after school program and the keys to their three passenger vans were taken.

Since the incident they have had to get new parts and keys for the vehicles used to pick up children in the morning and the afternoon.

“They or the individual grabbed every single key they came across,” said Anderson. “The financial part of this is huge, because we had to re-key the building as well.
This puts extra pressure on my fund raising projects, a real strain on the whole agency.”

She hasn’t talked to parents directly yet , nor do the children know, said Anderson.

There are 30 children in the afterschool program and several families are served by programs.

Anderson’s main concern is she would like to get the van back in one piece and in good working order because it was a fairly new vehicle.

It would also be nice to see other stolen items returned and see the person or persons who did it held accountable for the damage they caused.

“We still feel very vulnerable because how they got in is a mystery,” said Anderson. “Right now we are getting the word out and working with the police.”

According to the RCMP, neighbors advised that they saw a possible suspect, described as possibly female, short stature, wearing a black toque, red scarf around their face, white sweater and a black/red or orange backpack.

It has been further learned that a gas card was also stolen and that it had been used later that day at the Petro Can in Osoyoos and then again on March 31 in Rock Creek.

Anyone with any information concerning this incident are asked to contact Penticton RCMP at 250-492-4300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

And if the van had hit an innocent bystander during the chase, you and 10,000 other people would be on their case and backing a lawsuit.

I'm guessing it's not the HA, because that'd be beneath them. But on second thought, it'd be the customers HA or their ilk, who are desperate enough to afford the goods and services gangs offer.

What the hay? Why not at least TRY to chase it or follow behind at a "reasonable speed". This makes it seem like they watched the crooks drove off into the sunset and did nothing about it. Find that hard to believe. Especially when on the OTHER end of the scale, the cops in Vancouver tackle a cyclist and arrest him for running a red light with no helmet on? Of course there are always OTHER factors that we don't initially find out about that may be the reasons for what transpires.

Yet they have no problem pulling a u turn in traffic and a high speed burst to catch someone who committed the crime of travelling in excess of the posted speed.
I think the message the cops are sending here is deplorable. Crackhead B & E punks know now that if they make it to the getaway vehicle they will get away with it.

Friends of mine in Greenwood, were robbed on Easter Sunday - Neighbors saw a blue van parked in the driveway.
Cops called my friends last night, and said they've captured the thieves.

I think the Boys and Girls Club will be getting their stuff back soon.

That's too quick. It should have taken more time so everyone could bash the police more.

It appears they have been apprehended.

Arrests in Boys and Girls Clubs heist

The Penticton RCMP have recovered the van and other items stolen from the Okangan Boys and Girls Clubs in Penticton and two people have been remanded to custody for the theft.

On Wednesday at 5:40 p.m., the Penticton RCMP received a report that a female had just crashed into a parked car on Lakeshore near Winnipeg Street.

Residents of the nearby apartment high rise noted a female and a male flee the van.

The residents from their "high rise" vantage point were able to maintain a view of the two suspects and direct police to their whereabouts.

Police officers chased after the two on foot and both were eventually apprehended.

The 26-year-old woman from Penticton was found in possession of a quantity of methamphetime, trafficking paraphernalia and a number of cell phones.

The 33-year-old man from Kelowna, has a lengthy criminal record.

The two will appear in Penticton court on Friday.

A number of charges are being recommended including break and enter and theft in regards to the boys and girls club break in.

The two are believed to be responsible for a number of recent crimes in the Okanagan and the investigation continues with more charges likely.

Area director Jennifer Anderson said she was glad the people had been apprehended, but the van is a complete write off.

The duffle bag stolen from the club is also damaged and keys that were retreived are now useless, because they changed all the locks. The children's computer is also long gone. The only items they expect to get back are the stolen cell phones.

"I am glad to have the mystery solved, but because of this we expect to be out thousands of dollars and would appreciate any help from the community," she said.

The club also has a fund-raising golf tournament slated for June 12 at Sumac Ridge and would apprecaite donated items for the silent auction.
