Think this deserves its own thread - speaking of headlines
Stories that Castanet has not broken .... this is just one example of what has been discussed on numerous threads as to how Castanet handles writing their headlines. Makes you wonder doesn't it?

Headlines have often been overly dramatic, if not dangerously close to misleading, in order to draw attention, but then again, doesn't all media behave that way these days?

Has anybody thought to contact the news department for their input, or does it just make sense to proceed straight to the back-biting ?

Fluffy ... really? Contact the news department so that they can justify an error? Fact is they crossed the line ... lets just admit it. Isn't the first time or the only media. I think all media needs to become more accountable for what they are saying. Drama and fear sells and that I believe is the problem.

Straight to backbiting is much more dramatic!
So I saw a bumper sticker today that said, I'm a Veterinarian so I drive like an animal.

No, not really, just trying to stir the pot. Mass media has become a bit of a free-for-all in the last few decades. Editors and writers embrace the idea that scandal and sensationalism sells ad space, we have to keep that in mind constantly, in fact Mr. Rockcliffe's comments as quoted in the article would seem to indicate he sees nothing wrong with this flavour of journalism. That is definitely open for consideration, but personally I think that responsible, objective journalism is somewhat of a rarity these days.

Nothing wrong with the headline. If they don't increase enrolment they will close the school - they only have 64 kids this year down from 74 last year and the community is working save the school.

Would it have been hard for the reporter to check with the school before writing the article and then having an inappropriate headline tacked on by an editor? Principal Todd Lindsay told MyNaramata.com that he has received calls from CBC radio and EZRock wanting more information about the school closure. After telling them that there has been absolutely no mention of the school closing and that the school PAC are simply looking at ways to increase enrolment they lost interest.

People who assume a story's content from the headline deserve what they get. In fact assuming that a news story is the entire story, or even entirely correct is just as dangerous.
See Fox News for countless examples.

Someone saying there was 'absolutely no mention of the school closing' does not make it true.

Or that it is in the back of peoples minds. Of course they are concerned of that happening. Why else would they be trying to recruit students? Short second trumpet?

Speaking of headlines... http://www.castanet.net/edition/news-st ... htm#108055
... and in other news, a Kelowna man has had his shovel stolen, and at a nearby convenience store the clerk noticed some chocolate bars were unaccounted for.
Just sayin', this is a report worthy of Les Nessman!
$200 in booze swiped from liquor store
Cst. Kris Clark says the suspects got away with about half a dozen bottles of alcohol, but no cash.

"$200 in booze swiped from liquor store"

I have a completely different take on this story, zzontar. The story has a problem but it isn't the "minor" nature, it's the fact the headline doesn't draw attention to the severity of what happened.
The headline should have read something like :
"$200 in booze obtained in liquor store robbery"
The liquor wasn't "swiped" (ie, stolen,,, taken by theft), it was obtained by robbery.
Wayne Moore, the apparent writer of the story isn't alone in this type of error. It is committed in virtually every area of the media, be it written, verbal (radio) or video (TV).
Lesson -
"thief" - someone who takes an unattended item, no violence, no threats of violence
"robber" - someone who takes an item or attempts to take an item with violence or threats of violence
"robbed" - what someone should say after they have been the subject of a ROBBERY, which is described above
"burglary" - what happens when premises (not a vehicle) has been entered with the intent of or the actual theft of items. After you have been the victim of a burglary you HAVEN'T BEEN ROBBED.
"swiped" - slang for what a "thief" does, NOT what a robbers does.
It is common to see headlines : "Chevron Station Robbed"
The story goes on to say : "Sometime over the weekend thieves entered the Chevron station at XYZ Rd and ABC St. through a window and stole an undermined quantity of cigarettes." The Chevron station wasn't robbed, it was burglarized and the people doing it were burglars not "thieves".
We also hear : "Armed thugs entered the Bank of XYZ today in XXX, brandishing what appeared to be a shotgun and obtained an undisclosed amount of cash, the thieves were seen leaving in a blue........."
Yes, "thugs", "culprits" are great alternate terms for the robbers who robbed the bank, but "thieves" is not.
How confusing would it be to hear : "Armed thugs entered the Bank of XYZ today in XXX and obtained an undisclosed amount of cash, the rapists were seen leaving in a blue........."
There are generic terms for crimes, but "thieves" aren't robbers or burglars. "Swiped" isn't synonymous for Robbed.

While your statement is true the stories and headlines are being directed at readers who can't figure out the difference between than and then or their, there and they're. So everything seems to be getting "dumbed" down to a level they will understand.
