Similkameen Dam Article and Discussion.

Post by Atomoa »

Discussion of the damming the Similkameen.

http://www.castanet.net/edition/news-st ... htm#115731

The article mentions clearly the "many benefits" (largest paragraph in the article) and the local mayor is onboard.

There were "questions" about the environmental impact - but what they are and what answers were given are not mentioned, which strikes me as odd as if a list of "benefits" is given to the reader then logically a article would also list the "drawbacks".

A reservoir of 20 kilometres. No drawbacks to that?

Also throw in the new CPC streamlined 2.5 year maximum review process.

According to information released by the Outdoor Recreation Council of British Columbia, five waterways have been placed on the 2014 endangered rivers list, including the Similkameen.

Dam a endangered river? No drawbacks? Bad article.

What do people think?

The Outdoor Recreation Council of British Columbia indicated the sole reason for listing it as an endangered river is because of the proposed dam. Same for the Peace because of the Site C proposal. Is it a surprise to anyone that a group such as the Outdoor Recreation Council of British Columbia would label a river as endangered if a dam was considered for it? It's about as surprising as someone from PETA declaring they don't eat meat.
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

According to the report, the dam will flood out the most beautiful part of the river canyon and threaten the ecosystem there (fish and wildlife), hence this project "threatens" the river which has been there for thousands of years without interference.

In other words, the river wouldn't be endangered if wasn't under threat of being dammed.

These facts were clearly visible to the author of the article but were not mentioned. Only the benefits of the project were relevant.

I really like the Similkameen. Hidden jem just like the Slocan. Lately though it's been getting slapped hard. First a mine spill now this.
