Things to do

Post by GB17 »

I was wondering what kind of things peeps here do when Family members or Friends who have never been here before come for a visit ?

We had a Friend come for a visit in April from the Southern U.S. She was so amazed at how beautiful our part of the Country is. She will be returning for another visit :D .

I recommend things they cannot do in the Southern U.S. or things unique to our part of the world. Cycling or walking Mira Canyon is a great event to do.

I also highly recommend the Enchanted Forest if you have never been there.

Hey Glacier thanks for these idea's. I was also thinking about taking her to the Kettle Valley Steam Rail, she is a true history buff.

Wine Tours! Lots of good ones all over the place - a day trip down to the Osoyoos may be good. It has a new Interpretive center NK'MIP Desert Cultural Center, try http://www.destinationOsoyoos.com

How much time do they have here? A drive to Lake Louise and Banff may be good.

The Nickelplate Mine in Hedley is a good idea too. A bustour was 30.00/pp last year.

Are they gardeners? http://www.Lindengardens.ca

Good luck!

If they like History, then the KVR is a great idea.

I know a lot of Americans like Barkerville (kind of out of the way). I also have some American relatives who have travelled all over the world viewing gardens and they said Buchart Gardens in Victoria is the best they have ever seen, but again far away.

I am interested in what Keesa posted - linden gardens, I will have to check out. I second the mine at Hedley as a good one.

I have been told the Grist Mill near Keremeos is really good. http://bcheritage.ca/drawings/sites/site12/site12.html. I have been by it about 50 times, but never stopped (shame on me).

The GristMill was good but from what I saw on the News it was shut down and someone was trying to reopen it. Can anyone confirm this? I like the geography in that area better than up here. Same with Okanagan Falls.

GB, are they astronomy fans? The Dominion Observatory up White Lake Road is fabulous for the Drive, scenery and wineries.

How many days they coming back for?

Is Drumheller too far? The Royal Tyrell Museum is something Fabulous. Dinasour Provincial Park is more dramatic geographically but the Museum isn't.

In Vernon eh.....a day trip around Okanagan Lake starting on your side might be good. We stopped in multiple spots for views and lakeside visits in Fintry etc. Maybe have lunch at Okanagan Lake Resort?

There is a pleasant hike up Bear Creek Prov. Park that takes the hiker right down to the creek and back up the other side. Lots of people can do it.

What State are your friends visiting from?

Keesa thanks so very much for some more great idea's.

I am not certain how long she will be able to stay, I do know it will be longer than a couple of days. She is from Virginia & she has joined this Forum as Kattwoman2.

I was just reminded about how good Barkerville is the other day. If you like history, a trip to Barkerville was well worth it. It blows any similar BC sites out of the water.

A word of caution: Barkerville gets as much rain as Vancouver and is situated at 4000ft elevation. Time your trip during a heatwave.
