Vernon economy going from bad to worse

Post by ole smelly »

What id going on with the vernon economy every time you turn around another business has gone *bleep* up. The polson mall is now a ghost town the dollar store could not make a go along with it, edible arrangements a high respected US chain GONE. East side Marios abandoned along with a $25,000 bill on their front window.Talkin donkey and heavenly grounds gone. Even the salvation army thrift store is gone. Noticed lots of orchards and other businesses for sale. Even raniers bistro and their bagels are gone.

Had a wobbly pop with a local hack his sources indicate that the casino is even in trouble?

Soon the for sale sign for Vernon will be up??

Talking Donkey didn't close , they moved. Save me a trip to ES Mario's by telling more about the $25,000 bill.
Saw the sign " shops at polson " yesterday , and thought they should remove an s .
Torn on the Casino , a lot of jobs there , but it sucks a lot of money out of the local economy.

Talking donkey bought their own 1.2 million dollar building which Includes the salvation army store also so neither of those are gone at all.The Polson mall has been partially empty but still very busy since the big renos 2 years ago.East Side Marios I ate in in December? Did the closure just happen ? orchards for sale? what a surprize.
as far as vernon going from bad to worse is rather a very stupid ignorant statment.Vernon has always been noting but good
Heck when Hy,s steak house left vernon I though the world had ended and even though there has NEVER been a steak house that could hold a candle to them since then we all survived.People like the pheonix and think its close/? Its a POS compared to HY,s
actually Pheonix is overpriced, and lousy steaks

East Side Mario's is bankrupt, but only the Vernon franchise. The owner was caught the other day trying to load the tables and chairs from the restaurant into his truck when the the creditors showed up to put a stop to that. After reading the reviews of the Vernon East Side Mario's on the Urban Spoon, I have to say it's likely not the economy that did the business in. A 32% rating is an extremely low rating. This is the only restaurant in Vernon with a rating under 40%.

Ok that explains why it was still open at Xmas.As far as rating goes.Iam pretty fussy when it comes to good food and decent prices and they filled the bill on both parts so i strongley disbeleive the under 40% rating
Urban spoon is a joke the 32% is based on 7 reviews.SEVEN. JOKE The one real bad review was written by some sort of phycopath idiot its not even worth considering

So Vernon's economy is not in fact going from bad to worse then it seems. Is it even bad if shops can profit and purchase new buildings? Hmmm.... food for thought!

Maybe we are trying to catch up to West Kelowna ?

There are no decent jobs there or anywhere in the Kel/Vernon area . We know plenty of people that have left and moved to AB and that doesn't help local business either . We still live in Vernon but I work in AB because there is nothing there for work !
Its going to get a lot worse to.

Don't know, seems like new businesses are opening up too. Guess thats just the way it is ... some close, some don't and some open up.

The Polson Mall has been dying for years, they tried to bring new life in it, but the timing with the global economy didn't help on top of the location (pain in the *bleep* to get out of there) and no more bus service into the mall thanks to the new parking lot design I'm sure are also contributing factors. As for the dollar store, that store was already having problems when it was in the Village Green Mall from what I've heard but I'm sure a move to a location with limited service (public transit) and other stores didn't help them. As for Edible Arrangements, is there really a market in Vernon for such a business?

The whole chain is in trouble, Kamloops has shut down as well ...

Talkin' Donkey moved to 55th Ave and 24th St. Heavenly Grounds had short hours and was located right across from The Bean Scene which is much more popular and has longer hours.

Salvation Army TS moved to the same building as The Talkin' Donkey.

Never heard of them, where were they?

ole smelly wrote:Had a wobbly pop with a local hack his sources indicate that the casino is even in trouble?

I used to go to the old location everyonce in awhile, but now with the new location and elimination of actual human dealers, its' lost its appeal so I've only been there 2 or 3 times.

Probably the same time for any other city in this country.

I definitely agree that this is not a Vernon-specific problem. West Kelowna is being emptied out as businesses fall like flies. This prolonged recession is taking its toll on commerce throughout the valley.

In the past, people in North America made things in factories. We built our own TVs Fridges, stoves, cars, and just about everything. All those factories have been closed. Our consumer goods are almost all from Asia now. A study of WalMart's sales was done a couple of years ago. 94% of their sales was of things made outside of North America.

There will be no recovery from the recession. Unemployment will remain up near 10% in North America. Our governments will tell us that it is down near 7%, but a lot of people have just given up and quit looking for work and aren't included in the numbers anymore.

All those cheap consumer goods at WalMart are helping to keep the recession going. And soon you'll have Target to steal even more North American jobs.

That's why I'm a committed isolationist. Seal up our common USA/Canadian border and place 100% tariffs on everything from the outside with no exceptions. Then we'll pay $50 for a toaster but it will be one made by our neighbors and it will last 10x as long as the Walmart China $9.99 POS... so in the long run the consumer will still be ahead.

Call Centre Expands But Lays Off Staff

Written by Peter McIntyre

Growth at a Vernon business is unfortunately coming at the expense of some local employees.

SQM has laid off 40 of its 80 front line staff because their biggest client, a U-S health insurer, said they would only renew their contract if the firm employed Americans.

That's led to SQM hiring 65 people to answer phones at its new office in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho

Sarah Kennedy, senior vice president told CHBC Global news, "It was a tough management choice and we do feel for the people we had to let go."

Robyn Andrews, one of those impacted, says she feels bad for the single women with children who are out of work, but doesn't blame management.

"For somebody else to come in and dictate how they run their business, I think is very unfortunate."

The Vernon workers will get severance packages.

Thats awesome. But we continue to buy iphones and other American goods. Screw the U.S. Canadians, start supporting your own country as much as possible.
