Incorrect Gordon. The right thing would involve a good stout rope.

I remember this VERY clearly. At the time he was apprehended and went to court, I wondered why was he not charged with murder 1 - premeditated murder in other words??

bumped up

impo it is a crime that remaining relatives have to go through this every time this murderer gets a parole hearing.
May the current petition keep this pile of garbage behind bars, unfortunately only until the next parole hearing.

David do everyone a huge time saver, waive ALL future parole hearings. Leave prison via a body bag.

Shearing who has changed his name to Ennis (where's the "P" ?)

We all know that Shearing sought out this family, it wasn't a drug deal or robbery gone wrong, he didn't have a gripe with the family, he just plain victimized this family because he liked little girls.

I don't have a problem with Shearing being given a sentence that allows him to apply for parole. His sentence was "Life with no parole for 25 years", that's a fair sentence. However, Shearing killed 6 people.

Shouldn't that have been 6 X 25 years. Life with no chance of parole until he's served 150 years, seems fair. Of course the eligibility of parole will be re-implemented and shortened the minute his victims come back to life.

I'd add another bonus to the sentence if he ever was discouraged and didn't want to serve the 150, he could apply to be hung at any time he wanted.

Our lenient courts gave him six terms of "Life with no chance of parole", but then allowed them to be served concurrently. In other words he serves at least 25 years for one of the murders and zero for the other five.

I think that's really great, killers get volume deals. Kill one, then the rest are freebies. That's even better than BOGO at Safeway !

Putting the remaining family through any future parole applications is despicable. But this is Canada, "how can we help the perpetrator, screw the victims and their family, we have to be fair" Ah, news flash, this guy killed 6 innocent people, two of them children, after they were raped and God knows what else. Yup, he deserves a volume deal.

The only "good" that came out of this tragedy was showcasing the skills of the RCMP, who went to the extent of creating a replica of the truck and camper used by the family and toured Canada (great fun). Too bad all the evidence, including a car and the truck and camper were right under their noses not far from the crime scene in BC near Wells Grey Park.

Stay tuned for an RCMP information series on "How to Notify and Keep Safe a Population when a Nut Dresses up like a Mountie and Goes on a Killing Spree". With special attention to the creative use of Twitter. I'm personally waiting for the segment on shooting at innocent people who are in the vicinity of a suggested place of refuge, a firehall.

Anyone convicted of multiple murders should have the sentence be consecutively, 6 murder charges equals 150 years or carried out in a body bag (which ever comes first). Obviously no parole until all sentences are served.

So your loved ones are murdered. You have 25 years of only having to deal with the grief and not the murderer. Then bingo 25 years are up, now every two years your and family are terrorized once again. If not released, two years later a repeat.

So wrong.

My idea of life in prison and justice system idea, is 2 very different ideas.
The moment that loved one returns to life is the moment there murderer is released... or leaves prison in a body bag, which ever happens first.

I have no issues with the death penalty for some murderers.

Seems like only yesterday we were discussing another piece of :cuss: that killed children and is looking for parole, Bernardo,,, oh wait ! It was yesterday !

It's certainly not a "Justice" system, and I guess it won't change until a few MPs have family member murdered and they get to walk a few miles in the shoes of these victims. (yes, "victims", those that loved the murder victims are victims in my mind) Attending parole hearings every two years or so, complying with all the rules slanted in the favor of the convict.

Talk about torture. First the anguish of the murder, then the anguish of the investigation (hopefully not by the RCMP), the trial, where inevitably the victims and family will be placed on trial. Then the lenient sentence, then on top of the lenient sentence the early release applications and (likely) the inevitable early release.

For those who haven't read the story (link provided by GordonH above) here's an excerpt -

He was scheduled for a parole hearing in July, however, Tammy Arishenkoff a childhood friend of one of the victims, says that hearing has been pushed back to September.

According to the petition she is still managing in an attempt to keep Shearing behind bars, Arishenkoff says much of the delay is due to the fact he is applying for day parole.

"In essence - he is not ready, and is now filing other applications available to him in order to get around a failed full parole decision, she wrote.

Arishenkoff also indicated he can apply to be moved from the Bowden, Alta. medium-security prison he is presently housed in, to a minimum-security facility.

He could also apply for unescorted temporary absences.

Earlier this year, Arishenkoff sent the parole board a nearly 90,000 name petition asking that Shearing remain behind bars.

She also took exception to the fact friends and family were required to submit paperwork by May 1 for an anticipated July hearing, while Shearing was able to wait until the last minute to even decide if he would go ahead with the hearing.

The last paragraph certainly illustrates how the system works in the favor of the convict and is stacked against the family/friends of the victims. Isn't it bad enough that we slap the wrist of murderers ? We allow them to serve life sentences with a chance of parole after 25 years that always runs CONCURENTLY ? (appeal courts have recently ruled that consecutive parole restrictions are cruel and unusual punishment, unlike murder being cruel, I guess)
