June is typically the wettest month of the year in Kelowna, It's the only month where the monthly average precipitation exceeds 40 mm, but even for June this month is a very wet.

Here are the totals for June thus far for all stations within 200 km of Kelowna. Notice that only the two bolded places have not yet exceeded the monthly average. Kelowna and Winfield are already at twice the normal amount... and the month is not over yet!

huh . . . so even though it is wetter, it isn't wetter across the board? I wonder how Hedley and Princeton ended up with less when everyone else is soaked to the bone. . .

Wettness is never universal, especially in the summer. Last summer Williams Lake had one of the wettest July-Augusts on record last year, while Kamloops and Kelowna were both drier than normal.

Thunderstorms are hit and miss, dumping huge amounts in one area and completely missing another. Another thing about summertime is that thunderstorms are more frequent as you head east, so places out west like Princeton would have less thunderstorms than us.

Also, June is the wettest month of the year in Kelowna and Kamloops, but in Lytton it's one of the driest months of the year. Actually, June, July, and August are the three wettest months of they year in Kelowna and Kamloops, whereas they are the three driest months of the year in Lytton.

June 2012 was the wettest June ever recorded in Kelowna (records began in 1899, and data is available from 15 different locations):



Here is a list of all occurrences of 100 or more millimeters being recorded in June in Kelowna:

• 2012: 106.6 mm
• 1990: 102.5 mm {note: Kelowna Lakeview (West Kelowna)recorded 105.7 that month.}
• 2007: 101 mm

How wet was it last month, you ask? Very! Castlegar was the worst hit place in the province ending up 366% of normal! ie. 3.66 times wetter than the average. Even if we don't get another drop of rain for the rest of summer, this summer will be wetter than the average.

Well, it was pretty hot but it was making up for lost time. My tomatoes are quite happy with the heat though! Now we have a thunderstorm warning . . . thought we were done with this. :137:

My perception is that this summer seems to be one of extremes.

Sorry, I've been away from Castanet for a while. There sure has been a big contrast from last month to this month (unless you live in Princeton where July has been wetter than June)!

P.S. Kelowna are Vernon are some of the coldest places around. I did a little comparison between a dozen or so "randomly" selected places here in BC and one place wayyyy up in the Northwest Territories, and wouldn't you know it, Vernon and Kelowna are relatively COLD! See for yourself (the minimum temperature scale is on the right-hand side of the first graph)...

It's interesting how summer rainfall can be so hit and miss. On the 16th the Castlegar airport received 68 mm of rain, while the Castlegar hydro dam station just to the north only go 10 mm. Amazingly, Warfield (Trail) just to south had zilch.

Interesting to see that both Lytton and Lillooet have both almost reached 40 degrees as their hottest temperature so far this summer. This doesn't surprise me seeing that they are both two of Canada's hot spots, but this hasn't really been much of a summer to write home about so far temperature wise. There has never been temperatures that hot in Kelowna in my entire life. Kelowna did hit 40 degrees in 1994, which was the year before I was born.
