Premier Christy Clark, how do you like her so far?

I will admit that Christy Clark was NOT my first choice, nor my second choice for the job of Premier. In fact I was pretty critical of her in large part because I didn’t like her past track record, and on the whole I thought she ran the worst campaign of three major candidates. However since Christy Clark has become Premier I feel forced to admit that so far I have been both surprised and impressed by her performance.

What most got my attention was that in spite of trying to make friends in her own caucus she instead finally showed some respect to taxpayers by firing much of the deadwood that had been in cabinet and came up with a much smaller cabinet, even turning window dressing Minister’s of State. Kudos to Christy Clark for doing this.

I was next impressed in that she has shown no fear of firing people. Her sacking of Campbell’s handpicked appointed head of the public service, and subsequent firing of Campbell’s former henchman who was “golden” parachute into the public sector and the firing of the person who ran the Government’s spin department are all very good indicators to me.


On her swearing in ceremony she even had the class to rise above partisan politics and invited former Premiers like Glen Clark and Bill VanderZalm to attend the ceremony. This was apparently a first for them.

Most recently she has turned Rich Coleman loose to take on BC Hydro and start reviewing some of Campbell’s short sighted energy polices.

And finally she raised the minimum wage…quickly and decisively….no dillydallying or sitting on the fence simply made a decision and let’s move on.

So bottom line to date I must admit that I have been impressed with Christy Clark and what she has done in a little over two weeks. But that is just me. What do the rest of you think of her?

She's gotten off to a great start for all the reasons that you mention. I would add that her decision to go ahead with a review of the $6 million paid out to the BC Rail defendants is a wise move and I think her appointment of Abbott to the education ministry was wise as well. The minimum wage had to be raised and of course she's getting the predictable flak from those who say it's too much and those who say it's not enough. Anyway, if she keeps going this way she has an excellent chance of winning the next general election. She has seemingly grown into a more statesmanlike figure since her days in cabinet.

I agree with you, Al, on all your points.

One negative so far ......... not disclosing the amount of taxpayer money being paid to all the ones she just fired. So, IMO, she is not being open, accountable and transparent like she said she would be.

It's our money - we have a right to know where every penny of it is spent.

As Vaughn Palmer or Keith Baldrey said this morning on the Bill Good show, if Abbott can deal successfully with the BCTF he should be sent to the Middle East to help sort things out.

So far so good, and like yourself have to admit that so far I have been both surprised and impressed by her performance to date. I actually did vote for her as my second choice, mostly wanting to do whatever I could to keep Falcon away from control, but I'm okay that she appointed him as Minister of Finance (in spite of his public reluctance).

Sorry, I never did have first hand knowledge of her destructive first term in 2001 as I had been out of Canada for 6 years and did not return until 2005. But I have learned lots about the Liberals in the past few years, most of it bad.

While she definitely has personality and energy behind her, I'm afraid she'll turn into Obama of BC politics.
