Disgraced B.C. Mountie Robinson resigns before sentencing

Post by oneh2obabe »

A disgraced RCMP officer who was found guilty in connection with a 2008 traffic fatality and was involved in the death of Robert Dziekanski quit the force, just as his sentencing hearing opened in Vancouver.

Cpl. Benjamin (Monty) Robinson was found guilty in March of obstruction of justice following a collision in Delta, B.C., that killed motorcyclist Orion Hutchinson.

On Friday morning just as the sentencing hearing for the disgraced corporal was getting underway in B.C. Supreme Court, Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens announced Robinson had voluntarily submitted his discharge papers.

Callens said he immediately signed them.

"While I have been clear that I was seeking his involuntary dismissal, the opportunity to discharge him from the organization this morning was one which eliminated further delays, costs and uncertainty," said Callens.

"Mr. Robinson’s career with the RCMP has ended. As a private citizen, he is no longer subject to any disciplinary actions under the RCMP Act; however, he is still subject to the ongoing criminal matters," he said.

Robinson was facing an internal Code of Conduct investigation over the incident and the RCMP's commanding officer in B.C. had said previously that he wanted to see Robinson dismissed from the force.

Robinson, who was off duty at the time of the 2008 accident, left the scene before police arrived and went home to consume more alcohol, although he returned to the scene a short time later.

Justice Janice Dillon dismissed Robinson's defence in which he had claimed he had walked to his Delta, B.C., home a short distance away and had two shots of vodka to calm himself because he said that's what an alcoholic would do.

In her strongly worded judgment, Dillon said Robinson used his own police training in a deliberate attempt to obstruct justice. By drinking after the accident, there was no way police could determine if he had been impaired prior to it.

Dillon also concluded Robinson had lied to Delta police officers who came to the crash scene, understating how much he had been drinking at a party just before the crash.

Hutchinson, who died at the scene, was also found to have consumed alcohol before the crash.

Robinson has been suspended from the RCMP with pay since the collision in 2008.

Robinson is also one of four RCMP officers awaiting trial on a perjury charge in connection with the death of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski at Vancouver airport in October 2007.

Robinson was in charge of the team of officers who dealt with the disturbed and frenetic Dziekanski by quickly stunning him repeatedly with a Taser.

Sentencing submissions in the obstruction case could go all day Friday and the judge might reserve her decision following that.

The Crown and the defence are expected to put forward arguments on the length of sentence that should be imposed.

Does he still get a pension and such? Or when you resign do you leave all of that behind?

Robinson has been suspended from the RCMP with pay since the collision in 2008.

Shame. Mr. ROBinson should pay it back. He does not deserve a FOUR YEAR paid vacation for his actions.

It's disgusting that these sociopaths get paid vacation instead of punishment.

I heard about this on the news and they mentioned how his resignation could be just another trick to reduce the amount of punishment he recieves, so don't go thinking he grew a conscience all of a sudden.

Monty Robinson

Monty Robinson voluntarily resigned from the RCMP rather than allow them the pleasure of firing him. He gets to put behind him the pressure and scrutiny of the RCMP but he will have to endure years of civil issues in the death of a young motorcyclist in Delta whom he hit and killed and then tried to cover up his intoxication by leaving the scene and consuming vodka. This tactic is well know to police and for Robinson, it didn't work.

He also was the senior officer at YVR when Robert Dziekanski was murdered by the police. He was tasered multiple times and succumbed to the injuries sustained at the hands of the police. Robinson and his partners attempted to cover it up by lying about important details in their depositions. Again, this tactic did not work for Robinson.

While he may have only been one of four on the scene, he was the lead and he is, in my opinion evil.

Now he is acting like so many before him. He is feigning remorse for his actions but in fact is only sorry he was caught.

I am exceedingly happy that he is no longer a member of the RCMP and I can only hope that the system now treats him as any of us would be treated and that he spends a great deal of time behind bars.

I will follow his trials and tribulations up to his judgement day on July 27th where he will be sentenced. He could get up to 10 years but that isn't likely. It will probably be between 1 and 11/2 years which is sad but that is the reality.

I only wish the crown saw this guy for what he truly is and that they went balls to the walls after him by seeking the maximum.

You won't rest easy Mr. Robinson. Nor should you.
Praise the lord and pass the ammunition
