The Mexicans should not be here
If they don't like it they can leave
Pay enough to get local help or close it
Simple

If who doesn't like it they can leave? The Mexican workers are very happy to be here. They are very hard workers and reliable. The same crew come every year and are very thankful for the work. A win-win I would say. :sunshine:

I was in dawson creek working a few months ago. The cheapest place that wasnt a dive was a bachelor (no bedroom) for 2k per month. For 400 bucks they should stop their whining because they are being idiots. Tbeir boss sounds like a dick though.

Actually my friend was likely paying more than 30% over minimum wage as this was 2006 and he was paying $12/hr and benefits. He brought in outside workers, and when the jobs bubble crashed in 2009 and people came in looking for jobs he already had hired people who wanted to work. Next time I see him I will ask if he still brings in foreign workers. But if it makes you feel better to call me a liar go ahead - it just makes you look stupid.

My orchardist friend paid $13 an hour - this was before the last minimum wage increase - not a bad wage for, say, a student. But they don't want to work that hard. And why on earth would an orchardist pay benefits for a job that only lasts a couple of months? Give your head a shake.

give my head a shake?
pay attention again, the mexicans coming in under the BC agreement are given airfair, housing, food, and medical etc (thats benefits)
i will call BS on any fast food outlet in the okanagan paying $12 a hr in 2006, try $8.50
as for orchards they all advertise regular and the paying rate from osoyoos to vernon is $9.55 for labour.
their forman who has been there for 10 years may make $13.

Am I missing something here? Is $13/hr a good wage or something?

You people whine on and on about the low wages in the Okanagan, but think $13 is not a low wage? Just what kind of money are you making - $2/hr??

Might not be a low wage for, say, a gas pumper. Or for someone working a till at a cafeteria. But if you have any skills or education whatsoever, 13 is not a good wage. Hell, it's not even a living wage. You'd have to have 4 room mates and drive a 25 year old beater to live on that. And forget about ever retiring.

And that's just Kelowna. Go up north and try to live on that. Wouldn't even pay your rent.

I dunno about that.

The orchardist where I used to live brought in Mexicans every year for the past four years. He dinged them their air fare and they had to pay their own BC Med. He charged them for their accommodation (a converted garage with no water or heat) and for their electricity and they had to buy their own food (they had a hotplate to cook on). He drove them down to Rutland on Fridays and they did their shopping and banking and they had to get their own way home with their grocery bags. Sometimes they came home in a taxi if they had too much to carry, otherwise they walked the 7 or 8 kms from downtown Rutland up the hill. He connected them (without asking) to my cablevision so they could have TV.

I should get me a hot Mexican wife to work as a maid. I always had a thing for Salma Hayek.
