To implement austerity measures and "net zero" mandates should also mean their own spending habits (and salaries) should be subject to the same measures.

Why not?! Some people would love to have enough money to even eat at an IHOP. She expects everybody else in the province to live within their means and accept no pay raises for years and years. How's about a little bit of leadership by example?

Hey if that's what you're preaching to us (and the BC Liberals have been doing this since 2001 as an excuse to gut our province.)
She'd better bloody well do it then.

Unfortunately far too many politicians of all stripes, and at all levels of government, are guilty of this kind of behaviour. And it isn't going to change until we begin to make politicians expense accounts more accessible to the general public.

Of course, the downside of more public access means your going to get some people complaining about every single expenditure, and nit picking every claim. But as the alternative is having far too many of our politicians ripping off the public purse, I see no other solution.

Maybe an independent panel should be appointed to decide how much is a "reasonable" amount for politicians to be recompensed when on out of town trips. And I definitely like the idea of a previous poster who said that any politician who wants to spend more than the "approved" amount should do so out of their own pocket. My only question is, how would we decide who gets to sit on the proposed panel, in order to avoid people with unrealistic views making such decisions? By unrealistic, I mean on both the upside AND the downside. How could we eliminate those who tend to be overly generous when making such decisions, as well as those who tend to be unecessarily cheap? After all, we wouldn't want the Prime Minister to be relegated to staying at an Economy Inn and eating at McDonalds while on an important trade conference, would we? I don't think that would give a very good impression of our country. But by the same token, I don't think we want him spending $650 a night either.

Give them a reasonable budget per trip and make it work. Its how the rest of the biz world does it. Expedia is your friend.

First , let me say that I have little use for the abuse of power that permeates all political parties and I hope those who offend are caught and punished.
That being said, how many people did CLARK buy breakfast for? Is she entertaining people overseas in an effort to make better deals for B.C. ? The fact is, we have no idea. The "rant" from our person with the "new source" has no substantitive facts or details beyond the receipt. He may be right about CLARK but could just as easily be wrong!
Then people jump on their political bandwagon to denounce CLARK for everything wrong in their lives; again with no facts to support their claims beyond that they heard it from someone, who heard it from someone, who knew someone that might have been there for sure.
When our corrspondent accesses information, as he is allowed to do, maybe he will be able to support his allegations and provide them without his desire to show his contempt for others.

Excellent post asas. :rate10:

Without more facts to consider in the equation, this whole topic rests on a very shaky foundation, yet those who fervently embrace it, chastise those who in effect have far more data to support their argument, in other threads/topics.

You do realize that the article's author is Alex Tsakumis right?

I'm not condoning reckless overspending, but in the same breath, I won't allow myself to get all worked up over incomplete data, presented by a blogger with an agenda.

Yuppers, LW - I know. I also know all politicians rape and plunder their electorate so this comes as no surprise to me. I am a big supporter of fiscal transparency in minute detail, and CC and her predecessor and the whole bunch of insiders have been less than stellar in their honesty and integrity.

I expect the NDP will be the same if they get elected.
