2,667 Hydro employees made more than $100,000 last year
Hardly surprising, as most of a utility company's employees will have specialized skills and be educated. Engineers, technologists etc.
The blue collar guys who get called in at 2AM to do emergency service also require specialized skills, and that commands a higher wage. Plus OT.

So , do you think the Telus or Shaw techs are making that kinda dough ? I don't think so.

They very well could be. $40+/hr is not unreasonable for a communications tech. However it's doubtful that such a large fraction of their staff would make that kind of money as i'm guessing the majority are CSR's of some sort.

Whomever has a problem with the pay levels should upgrade their skills and maybe they can make that kind of money too.
A loser reporter who makes $60,000 a year writes out of pure jealousy. Maybe he should try making billion dollar decisions in the boardroom at Hydro that could affect many employees' or customers' futures and experience the stress level, or try hanging in a bucket 50 feet in the air in the dark, wind and rain with a few gigawatts of electricity sparking beside him.

Why would you even compare them? They're in totally different businesses. If you want to compare them to somebody, at least compare them to Fortis. Just because they work with cables doesn't mean the do the same jobs...

Haha ok whatever. How many days out of the year do storm-driven power failures happen?
he's not defending the lucrative pay packet, he's trying to blame workers overtime for the increased wages, instead of the real culprit....overpaid executives.[/quote]
Well actually 27% of my pay last yr was in the form of overtime. In a field directly related to a similar power company.
Pretty much every 2 nights I get a call for something someone else caused to the system. Car accidents, trees down, slides, storms, animals, shutting down system for other emergencies, construction, human error. etc, etc.

Great point and I agree 100%. That is what people seem to be missing; it is a high skilled job.

Get your class 3 license and apply for a linesman apprenticeship. Once you finish the first year apprenticeship training, you'll be driving the bucket truck and running around on the ground fetching tools and being safety watch. At least that's how it was when I applied several years ago.

Ah. Then there's a lot more to it than I thought, that's why it has a six digit salary attached.
