Safe Walk re-launched this month as a Campus Security program

Need an escort around campus? Safe Walk is now a 24 hours per day service for the Okanagan campus.

Campus Security is now coordinating all Safe Walk activities and the service will be offered every evening until midnight by Safe Walk student escorts. These student escorts can be identified by their new red Safe Walk jackets. During off-hours Campus Security personnel also offer the same service.

To request a Safe Walk escort at any time call 250-807-8076.

Students, faculty and staff are also encouraged to drop by the Campus Security dispatch office in the Administration building to pick up a Safe Walk key tag and have the number handy for whenever it's needed.

This is the same program they are reporting on for UBC Vancouver and the ongoing attack problems there.... good to see they have it here as well....
Wonder if the College has such a program?

Yes, I was reading the thread you started here on Castanet.

I was appalled by the nature of the ‘discussion’ that broke out there and continues, and I sense your frustration with it as well.

What’s more important: immediately informing, or reminding students and parents of students about this topical UBC campus service, or arguing over semantics, hurling insults at one another, and endlessly trying to support personal dogma?

I believe posting constructive information like this topical Safewalk service, and trying to draw and focus attention on people using their telephones first as offence-defense would now probably get uselessly lost in the bray over on your thread.

And it seems to me the Castanet news report (as well as CHBC) didn’t mention Safewalk either.

Yeah, maybe I’m coming off as ‘high and mighty,’ where were the UBC spokespeople when it came to this, but then, perhaps displaying that type of attitude might be interesting for some people to discuss here too, so bring it on. At least it may keep this ‘topical item’ bumped.

Some ‘public service’ we have going here, eh?

Safewalk type programs have been around for quite some time and it surprises me that they are not taken seriously by those who would or should use them for sure.
The point is to get the message out that it is not safe to go where you want when you want .... it is a fact of life and like it or not to err on the side of caution is the mantra of the day.
Arming ones self to death is not the answer either as the weapon of choice can just as easily be taken from you and used against you.
Student associations have a multitude of information for students and are a highly recommended source of peer support....
