If you always remember to lock the door or you don't ever visit a home that does not have toddlers to worry about. It's not just about outside doors either. We all have rooms that toddlers should not have access to for various dangers and levered handles make it so much easier for them to get in unless second latches are also employed. Pets are very quick to learn how to open any of these doors too.
I just think people should have the right to choose how they want to open their own damn doors.

Any responsible parent should take all precautions to make sure their toddlers cannot access dangerous places in the home. We used a plastic knob cover that had to be squeezed very firmly to be able to open a door.
So there are always precautions that need to be taken whether its latches or some other device to keep them in/out and not just with levers.
As to pets I wish mine would figure out how to get in and out of the house so I didn't have to get up 50 times a day! lol
(And I don't have somewhere to install a doggie door and she's too of much a woos to use one)

What is all the fuss about? If you do not like levers change them to knobs, one knob to another should satisfy you all .

If you read the story Vancouver is going to ban doorknobs. No option.

We used those plastic doorknob covers too. Anyone who has ever been a parent knows how quickly a toddler can disappear from your sight and those plastic covers worked great......for keeping them in the room you were in too! I haven't seen a cheap and effective child proofer for the levered handles though. Anyone? It would seem the only option is a second higher latch which would likely involve screwing into the door and door jam. Read damage. And what does such a solution do for someone on the opposite side of the door to the second latch?
Forcing every private home to be "handicap" friendly is just plain nanny state interference. If I sell my home to someone that has grasp issues, they can change the doorknobs and faucets themselves!

I've had handles in my house for over thirty years and they're great. But you have to careful not to snag your clothes on them. But really, do we need some city council to say we must have handles. It must have been a slow day at city hall.

Between the doorknobs and our kitchen drawer handles I'm getting caught all the time. Hmmm maybe I should get the Mrs to sew up my pockets! lol
