BC sheds ~8000 jobs in November

Post by NAB »

....most of them full time jobs in the education and technology sectors. Losses were slightly offset by "slight gains" in the manufacturing sector.

Considering that of the several BC locations listed, only Kelowna's unemployment rate increased, I'd have to say the jobs plan isn't doing too terribly badly.

Kelowna, a tourist town, sees higher unemployment in the midst of winter, who'da thunk it? LMAO

Ya, looking around BC even Nanaimo unemployment rate dropped. However somehow I doubt 8000 full time jobs lost can be substantially based on Kelowna's winter loss of tourism. But it is interesting that Kelowna seems to have lead the way in BC and Alberta's YOY unemployment increase amount.

BTW, winter hasn't even officially started yet in November, let alone being in the midst of it.

It's not just winter loss of tourism NAB. The orchards around here aren't exactly hopping with activity either, and I'd be willing to bet that some construction jobs have been eliminated for the time being as well, while service industries like hotels and restaurants are in their off season.

I doubt there's enough snow bunnies yet to make up the loss of summer tourists.

The independent panel that looked at the HST told us that by 2020 we would create 24,000 well paying jobs if we kept the HST. I'm not too concerned about the monthly rates that go up and down but long term we would have had more jobs if we had kept the HST. Too bad we didn't.

There are old guys in Nanaimo getting weekly buzz-cuts now that haircuts are 70¢ cheaper. Probably have weekly photo-ops too. Isn't it a shock that a tourism-based and agriculture-based jobless rate in Kelowna climbs when it hits -15 outside? Must be Christy's fault.
