the article i posted, as with many articles i post, are others' words, not my own.

i am suggesting and of the belief that if an offender repeatedly choses a location and a demographic and a method, then it is simply not random. if you reflect back to laila's article you will see the police were slow to warn the public in a previous serial situation, and i believe that for whatever reason, the police are downplaying the likelihood of this instance being the work of a serial offender once again.

Why bother to post an article whose first line is 180 degrees from your opinion.

1.) While the "attacks are similar in nature and circumstance" they have not been linked. So unless you can prove otherwise, it's speculation at this point.
2.) Besides being "female" the demographics are not the same.
3.) The locations were near to one another, not the same (Newton Arena versus nearby bus stop).
4.) Method - still not released.

Assuming they are talking about the bus loop outside the wave pool then it is basically the same place. It is in the same city block.

This area has been a problem since I can remember. HA even had a clubhouse only a few blocks from there.

I feel so very sorry for something like this to have happened to this young lady. Unfortunately it will probably continue to happen. It would be nice to see judges without bleeding hearts hand out a sentence that fits the crime for a change. Until sentences get tougher on criminals I fear that things will get worse.

people shouldn’t be leaving arenas on their own or even walk to their car [alone].”

“It is important that people are aware of their surroundings when they are out and that they keep their valuables concealed.

These are two of the stupidest comments I have read in a long time. Now people can't be leaving arenas alone? WTH? I can see the casino, or Macy's with an arm full of bags, but a flippin' arena?

I can't even imagine how long it must have taken this poor woman to put on her best jewels and designer clothes, and she must have needed a fancy electronic hand held gizmo with gps to drop her kid off at the arena. Conceal your valuables, at the arena, really?

If the freaks responsible for this are caught, and the judge sentencing them makes such stupid comments, putting the onus of safety on a mother simply dropping her kid off at an arena, then no wonder society is going to heck in a hand basket. Take the rotten piece of crap back to the parking lot, schedule a public flogging, and flog (him) within an inch of (his) life. Charge admission, and have the courts pay that money in to hiring security guards to be on call 24/7 to escort innocent parents and their children in to innocent places like arenas. What's next? SMH

Hockey mom dies of injuries
by The Canadian Press - Story: 105686
Dec 31, 2013 / 1:30 pm

Update -- 1:30 p.m.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has announced that 53 year old Julie Paskall of Surrey succumbed to the injuries she suffered when attacked outside the Newton Arena in Surrey, BC on Sunday night. She passed away in the late morning hours of Dec. 31.

"The motive for this unprovoked attack remains robbery with both IHIT and the Surrey RCMP continuing to work toward finding out who is responsible." says Sgt. Adam MacIntosh of IHIT.
All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.

Canadians are too nice for that. We allow our government to lead us around like blind sheep and all we do is snivel, stomp our feet a bit, and then we say sorry. Surrey now has a task force in place, I highly doubt that they will see that not only in Surrey but across our country the system has become inadequate. What ever excuse can be given to a member(s) of our society that allows even the faintest sign of forgiveness of such a cowardly and heinous crime, it is unlikely there will be a punishment, in this country, to fit. The criminals have more rights in this country than their innocent victims, and until something changes there will be no deterrent, no justice.

How stupid does one have to be not to be able to comprehend the concept of victims being "randomly" selected? It matters not whether the same person or persons is doing the selection or whether they are repeatedly selecting victims. What is so difficult to understand about this? A serial killer might select only young women who are blonde. The individuals who become the victims can still be randomly selected. If the perpetrator doesn't know them; has no prior connection to them and only encounters the victim because that person is [unluckily] in that location at that time.... then it is RANDOM!!!

Here in lies one of the worst laws we have in Canada. The person whom did this, once proved beyond ANY doubt
should be executed immeadiatly after conviction. Oh no we must now rehabilitate this poor soul. What a crock of HS
Just like the GH beheader. That guy should have been shot right there on the spot and now hes being let out on escorted patrols. Its like saying a pitbull can be retrained?

How can you compare the Greyhound Bus beheading suspect with this [unknown] criminal, who it appears was motivated to violence in the course of robbing this woman of her purse? The man who murdered and beheaded the bus passenger was quite obviously insane .... he stood to gain nothing material from his actions and I have read nothing to suggest that the murder victim or anyone else, had done anything to provoke violence from his assailant. By anyone's definition, this murderer was insane and at the time of the crime was out of control. To suggest that the GH guy should have been summarily executed is ludicrous. If you said that capital punishment ought to be the penalty for persons convicted of 1st Degree Murder, in cases where the circumstances are particularly heinous, or in cases such as the Surrey Six murders, where two innocent citizens were killed by gangsters in circumstances such as occurred in that instance.... or [for that matter] in this most recent case where the hockey Mom has been murdered, there are likely many who would agree with you... myself included. Your position on the execution of the severely mentally ill is pretty much barbaric. There are people who's mental illness is extreme and their are people who are just plain evil and as a society we have the capacity to fairly accurately distinguish between the two. You don't happen to support the cutting off of hands for petty theft or driving of vehicles of children's arms where they have been caught stealing do you?

Surrey MLAs meet with RCMP, raise concerns after fatal beating

By Kim Bolan, Vancouver Sun December 31, 2013

Three Surrey MLAs met with RCMP Chief Supt. Bill Fordy Tuesday to raise their concerns about the devastating, fatal beating of hockey mom Julie Paskall outside the Newton Arena.

Surrey-Newton NDP MLA Harry Bains said Fordy told him and colleagues Bruce Ralston and Sue Hammell that police “are doing everything they can with the resources that they have. They certainly said they could use more resources.”

Bains said he has been getting emails and phone calls from concerned area residents who are too fearful to go about their regular business in the community.

“The issue is what are the police doing. What is the government doing – both levels – to make sure that the people in our constituencies feel safe in their own homes and when they are doing their routine family work – walking to the store, walking to these public facilities, riding the bus,” Bains said. “I think that is the big issue right now in the public’s mind. And people don’t feel safe considering what is happening in their neighbourhoods.”

He said the MLAs asked Fordy why RCMP did not issue a public warning after a Dec. 16 attack near the Newton Arena that they now believe might have been linked to the person behind Paskall’s beating.

“They thought it was an anomaly and they didn’t think it was something they should be alarming the public about,” Bain said. “But certainly after this one, they thought it was very, very important that they raise this issue with the public and bring it out and they did.”

“All of us wish that they had raised this issue. And the worst part of this is that the man, or whoever is responsible, is still out there and isn’t caught.”

He said Fordy told them he’s meeting with municipal officials about resourcing.

“There are some resources that the province could actually provide to deal with some of the issues that might be behind some of the crime that we face in Surrey,” Bains said.

I'm not worried what I say, if they see it now or they see it later, I said it. If you don't know maybe that would hurt you, I don't know. You should know though, so you don't get hurt, so you know what side to be on when it happens.

Online reaction to death of Surrey hockey mom

By Negar Mojtahedi Global News

Family and friends are turning to social media to express their grief and sadness over the death of Julie Paskall, the hockey mom who was beaten senselessly outside a Newton Wave Pool and Recreation Centre.

On Twitter, friends of Julie Paskall’s children are referring to her as Momma Paskall.

She was very involved with her son’s junior hockey league and was picking up her son Cailean, who was refereeing a hockey game, when she was attacked.

Family members are posting messages on facebook. Randy Paskall, a relative wrote on facebook that his world has forever changed.

“Off to say a last goodbye to a friend and family member of 35 years. One who taught me much in the rules of life, made me a better person, picked me up when I was down, showed me a better road, and was what a person/friend/parent/mother/daughter/wife/role model should strive to be in this thing called life.
Nothing can bring her back, it will never be the same without her, no matter what happens after this, let us weep but not lose strength or most of all WHO we are.
My message to you my friends, is to keep your heads up, this is no longer the world we grew up in. Stay vigilant. Stay safe. Stay healthy.”

People who had no relation to the victim are taking to Global B.C.’s facebook page and twitter to give their condolences to the family.

Brian Paterson wrote “RIP and my condolences to her family. I cannot believe this is what the world is like now.”

Her tragic death has prompted a community group, the ReNewton Nation, demanding that the City of Surrey install CCTV cameras.

Jude Hannah, one of the organizers of the community group says “we’ve been asking for the City of Surrey to pay more attention to the Newton neighborhood for sometime now. This is the worst case scenario and we are just so sad and very disappointed in the City. We just feared that this would happen and now this has.”

In the late afternoon, Hannah went down to the Newton Wave Pool and Recreation Centre and says several of the lights were out. “Part of the problem is the lighting in fact.”

Surrey’s Mayor Dianne Watts tweeted ” we have security cameras at all facilities. Will coordinate with businesses & review CCTV options.”

Hannah wants positive change in the neighbourhood, but adds that the “worst nightmare has already happened to a family.”
