Terror charge against BC man
by The Canadian Press | Story: 119669 - Jul 23, 2014 / 1:37 pm

A British Columbia man has been charged under a new anti-terrorism law for allegedly leaving the country to join Islamist fighters in Syria.

It's the first time the recent Criminal Code legislation has been used as a tool to fight terrorism, said RCMP Cpl. David Falls.
Police say 25-year-old Hasibullah Yusufzai is accused of committing an offence for the benefit of a terrorist group or was directed by or associated with such a group.

"The individual is known to have travelled to Syria to join Islamist fighters," the RCMP said in a statement.

It's alleged Yusufzai left Canada Jan. 21.

"This case underscores the reality that there are individuals in Canada who have embraced the extremist ideology and who are willing to act upon it," the RCMP statement said.

there was a muslim goofball given 10 years in the federal pen today out of Ontario for the same thing.I say this is abuse of our tax dollars. If these nutballs want to go to Syria and gaza etc. I say let them but then you are no longer a CDN and you can not return to Canada. Why waste millions of tax dollars to find one muslim nut ball guilty of TRYING to join a overseas conflict and then us having to house him in a federal pen for 10 years.

If this individual was going to commit a crime outside of the country, how come he's charged in Canada by Canadian agency?

Better yet give him a vest of explosives and let him practise in an open field.

that's my point exactly.?? Do we arrest anyone that we hear may be going to france and may rob a bank or whatever?

This guys brother claims he was simply going over there to study some religion bs thing. Our beloved Canadian security organization deceided he was going to join a banned terriost group and was arrested before he ever left the country and was put in jail for 10 years

QUOTE:Hersi was convicted of attempting to participate in terrorist activity abroad and trying to enlist an undercover officer. The Crown argued he was trying to join the Somali militant group al-Shabaab, which Canada deems a terrorist entity.

The 28-year-old, who was working as a security guard, intended to travel onward to Somalia to join al-Shabaab, the Crown said.

He was bound for Cairo when he was arrested at Toronto's Pearson International Airport in 2011.

Hersi never officially joined the group and denied the allegations, saying he was going overseas to study Arabic for several months.

See, but that's bordering on punishing somebody for a crime they haven't committed before in a country that is not Canada UNDER Canada laws. If they commit a crime in Syria - well, let them be punished by Syria.

Practice is good..... But it doesn't make "perfect".

Only Perfect practice makes "perfect".... Lets makes sure he , and others like him, know that before they get sent off to that field..

I get your point Captain, and its a fair one. However, we (our government, society?) have determined that participating or even simply just supporting terrorism is a crime in Canada - and a serious one.

To Captain Awesome ...

Sometimes going by the book does not cut it, as when PET brought in the War Measures Act and suspended civil rights in order to deal with the Terrorist FLQ in Quebec who had killed one Government official from Britain and Kidnapped the Quebec Labuor Minister. Unfortunately after using the War Measures Act to enable the Police to make arbitrarily arrests, carry out arbitrary searches and deal with all known FLQ members he had the War Measures Act done away with so it could never be used again.
