3 police cars is a "high police presence"? One unmarked and two marked cars together sounds like a traffic section setting up somewhere, but making is a conspiracy is far more fun.

The wires of comment would be alive and well if 2 marked and 1 unmarked police car was in town. Remember this is an extremely small town where everyone knows everyone and what they are eating for dinner!
This is exactly why people that wish to "hide" from society, loners and those who do not want to be in and around people, industry and the royal hub of life, tend to migrate to this type of area.
It is also why "witness" types are not always what one would want on their side. Especially when it is dealing with authority, as after all it is possible they too are in the area to get away form it all!

Please quote the relevant part of omisimaw's post that states a person in the privacy of a place - they can do what they want. I didn't read that.

So your statement is not applicable and not within this concept.

So back to this - he was obviously in someone else's cabin and that makes it not his business - he'd be trespassing.

I am? please clarify... if you mean I believe that people have the right to privacy behind closed doors you would be correct and there are laws that protect that right.
Unless the police have a search warrant (basically) you have the right to your privacy and can deny them entry to your "home".
This is the law! Police can suspect all sorts of things about you or your actions but unless they have sufficient proof to obtain a search warrant then what goes on behind closed doors is private.
