$2361……………..School District 87 Stikine
$2414……………..School District 50 Haida Gwaii

the reason these are so high is because the low numbers of people whom own homes and pay taxes
If they(gov) were smart they would make the Indians whom use the same schools but live on reserve pay school tax also
so basically all the non reserve home owners pay for the schools that the reserve home owners use free of charge

It should be averaged out so everyone pays the same! Why should West Vancouver people pay about half what we do.

I think they adjust the rates so that districts with higher land values pay less per acre, but still more overall. For example, someone in West Vancouver has an acre worth $2 million while another person in Kelowna worth $0.2 million. Both have million dollar mansions on their places. The West Vancouver dude pays less per $100,000 of value than the dude in Kelowna, but still more tax in total.

I'm not saying it's fair; I'm only trying to figure out why they come up with the rates. It does seem like places with higher land prices pay lower rates. Interestingly, SD 70 (Alberni) has a different rate within the school district. All other districts have the same rate across the board. Therefore, buddy up in Joe Rich where land is cheaper than Captain Awesome at Christmas pays less tax per acre than buddy in Kelowna where land is kinda expensive.

each school district has a separate budget. The amount of tax payers in each district dictates Cost per property
school district A has a budget of 1 million and has 500 propertys= 2000 tax PP
School district B has a budget of 1.5 million but has 800 propertys= 1875PP

The school taxes go into general revenue, and don't cover even half the costs associated with education. From General revenue, the government gives each SD a some of money on a per student basis. As far as I know, this number is the same across the board.

It would be interesting to know what each school is allotted per student. Including any difference paid or not paid by or on behalf of any given student.

I have personal knowledge that not all schools get paid the same rate for each student, nor does any given school receive the same rate for all students. I think transportation to get students to school is a fairly large item in some school districts. Including transportation by boat.

I'm sure that the cost of education can vary from district to district but having said that would it not be fairer for all taxpayers to pay an equal amount towards this cost.

My kids are long out of school but I am still having to pay the education taxes. So should I move to West Vancouver to get a break on that? lol

Only if you want to pay the non school tax portion of the West Van school property tax bill. Me thinks you are probably much better off where you are.

Bingo AND there in lies the socialistic part of our so called democratic society. You buy a house and you don't have kids in school but you pay as much or more than people whom do.
Untill your 65 then you get a little bigger home owner grant

Those who have more than others have always paid more than their share of ALL of the price of our social safety nets and "equil opportunity systems". We would and could not afford them without the "haves" paying the majority of the costs involved.

How else do you think the "second generation welfare" types with three kids in school manage to get by ?? In many, if not most, other countries they would have to look out for themselves. Survival of the fittest.
