That's because anyone even remotely close enough to the problem knows that banning the wolf cull will extirpate the caribou from Kootenays, and thus wouldn't be so asinine as to demand that we "save the wolves." She may as well update her slogan to "Extirpate the Caribou."

Sad comment to her is, if she wasn't such a hose bag, we might actually care what she thinks.

Cull snowmobiling.

The Canadian Press:
PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - Thrill-seeking snowmobilers east of Prince George, B.C., could be putting endangered mountain caribou at risk.

Environment ministry officials and conservation officers are warning snowmobilers to stay out of clearly marked areas designed to protect the animals.

Biologist Dale Siep says snowmobiles create well-packed highways for wolves, cougars and other predators.

He says mountain caribou rely on deep snow to create a barrier between them and their natural foes, but snowmobilers destroy that protection.

Conservation officer Todd Hunter says the problem is growing, and warns violators could face stiff fines for venturing into protected areas.

Officials estimate up to 98 per cent of the world's mountain caribou live in British Columbia and 800 animals, roughly half the entire population, lives in the region east of Prince George. (CKPG)

At this stage in the game (no pun intended), that would be a very good idea. Even still, it's highly likely that a wolf cull would be needed because the numbers are so low. It's hard for a herd of 20 animals to come back. The wolf cull has had a major impact in the Chilcotin where the deer and moose were decimated by wolves. Now that the ranchers have shot a few 100, the moose and deer are back. Not only that, but caribou have been seen for the first time since the 1920s.

It's unfortunate that what nature used to take care of on its own to balance populations of wildlife now requires more and more human intervention to manage. Loss of territory, climate change, building of highways , roads, logging , mining, pipelines and so many other things have been affecting migratory patterns, ups and downs in the population of many wildlife species. There is no easy answer except to ensure that when any human intervention seems called for, it is well thought out and justified.

Years and years ago I was talking with a biologist and said something along the lines of "nature used to balance itself". He said well, actually, left to their own devices entirely, populations tended to go in cycles, sometimes of 40 years or more, where predators would take their prey until numbers got too low, then the predator populations would starve and dwindle while the prey made a comeback.

Sometimes other impacts (the wrong kind of weather in winter, or parasites or disease, or loss of habitat or food-source through natural phenomena) occurred while the prey species was at its lowest, and it wouldn't make it back to healthy numbers for a very long time, if ever. When a combination of negative natural impacts occurred while populations were at their lowest point of the cycle, that species might be extirpated.

If what he told me was accurate, that makes the rest of what you posted even more important. If species were dying out even before we added complications, and we want to prevent species from dying out now, proper management is essential.

You are absolutely bang-on: "There is no easy answer except to ensure that when any human intervention seems called for, it is well thought out and justified."
There is nothing more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. - Martin Luther King Jr.
