A hunter had a double dose of bad luck Thursday night, east of Prince George.

A black bear wandered into a hunting group's camp about midnight, entered an open tent door and attacked the sleeping man, according to B.C. Conservation officers.

In the melee, the man's hunting partners shot and killed the animal, but in the process the hunter was struck by a ricochet bullet.

He is recovering in hospital in Prince George.

The incident happened about 100 kilometres east of the city.

The extent of the man’s injuries is not known, but he has yet to be released from hospital.

Officers say the bear was in good health and about 350 pounds, and there was no obvious reason for the animal to be attracted to the camp.

Police and conservation officers both responded to the incident.

Rachael suggests to keep from attracting bears to your campsite, follow a few guidelines:

1.Manage your food – keep it in closed containers and away from sleeping areas. Also, change your clothes after cooking especially aromatic foods like bacon or fish.
2.Sleep in a tent – even a thin barrier will deter bears from attacking.
3.Do not sleep with toothpaste, deodorant or other personal hygiene products in your tent.
4.Always have bear spray to create a deterrent from curious bears

Well, we know a tent doesn't help.
