It's interesting that Prince Rupert and Nelson were bigger than Kelowna back then. Here is a list ranked in order. Okanagan places in red.

During WW2 Prince Rupert had between 21,000 and as high as 35,000 population. Being so close to Japan and having an ice free deep water port made it a massive staging area. The port entrance had submarine nets and there were gun emplacements on the mountainside overlooking that entrance. Highway 16 from Rupert to Terrace was also completed in 1944 due to the war.
Why use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice.

I find it hard to believe there was 610 people in Stewart.

LOL Silverton hasn't changed much since then.
