Special Needs Children in BC
I remember when I first moved to BC in July 2008. My daughter who has DS, was 20. I brought every piece of information from schools to specialists with me. I walked into CLBC to get her hooked up with programs, etc and was told I needed to prove that she had Down Syndrome. Not only was I shocked, but I left crying. It was like someone punched me in the stomach. I did as they asked, but to this day it still makes my stomach turn.

There is just over one year until we have a choice to continue with this type of government or to give someone else a chance .There are two by elections in the lower mainland right now, here is an example for you of what could be a better choice, come that election in our province.

Re: Special Needs Children in BC
It seems pretty silly to have to "prove" someone has DS when usually we can look at someone with DS and clearly see the disability.
I'm guessing they ask for documentation because there are other disabilities that you can't see clearly. But still...I get you. Sometimes the paperwork process is unrelenting. I too have wondered if people who lack resources and energy don't just give up. Any parent who has a child with special needs can identify with sheer exhaustion and just the fact that it seems to take so much more time and energy to parent than you can spare as a paperwork fairy.
Keep on advocating, it's worth it and important.

Look at things from the other side for a second here though. An out of province resident walks in with some papers and asks for thousands of dollars in support and upon not receiving a cheque leaves crying. That isn't advocating at that point.
There is funding available and people have every right to access it, and can, however it isn't a system that works by "take my word for it this is all legit I promise". Seeing a doctor and filling out a form shouldn't be a "breakdown moment" or even a surprise.
As for the news report, school records being poor and the fact that many areas of the healthcare system are regularly audited, in face the school official stated that it was also to ensure they can get as much funding as possible for the children, what monsters.
Certainly the parents can feel annoyed I don't blame them, but wouldn't they prefer the school was doing something to ensure the maximum support for their child?

First of all...you don't walk out with a cheque in hand, secondly the reports that I have are from roughly 3 years old. Doctor's, physiotherapists, speech pathologists, special needs teachers and aides, the list goes on. The file at that time was over an 1 1/2 thick.
I'm sorry that some people do not understand the constant loop holes we have to go through and hope they never have to find out.
The people in this article have already done the paperwork to prove that their child is intellectually disabled. Is there any other group of people that have to prove themselves again and again?

War Veterans have to prove themselves again and again. Even if both of your legs were blown off, they still need a doctor's note every year to support that claim. It is sick and wrong.
There does need to be a better way to 'diagnose' a problem in an on-going manner.

I am fully aware actually of how it all works. I guess I have a bit of a sore spot when people endlessly play the victim, I've just never found that attitude to be helpful in anyway to any parties involved. Is it an annoyance, certainly, is it some atrocity done out of malice, not even remotely.

I was not aware of this...it is appalling every year to have to prove that. I am so sorry!

Well I certainly felt personally attacked. I was not sharing my story for sympathy or anything of that sort. I was simply stating a fact. I have never "played" the victim and I don't intend to start now! For the record, I am an advocate and have been a trail blazer in many things. I'm not a child, I am very well educated and have been involved with people who are intellectually disabled for 28 years.
I too have a sore spot...for people who see things in black and white!

I know couple quadriplegic's (not children but adults) who are reassessed about receiving disability from the Province, it did matter which political power was in Victoria.
Oh yeah as if that is temporarily condition, medical panel for BC Disabilities sometimes are idiots.
I don't give a damn whether people/posters like me or dislike me, I'm not on earth to win any popularity contests.

The govt of BC tries to shirk responsibility for everything. They mainstreamed special needs students into public schools and said they would provide support for them. They didn't. Now a lot of classrooms have one kid in them that makes it impossible for the other 23 kids to learn anything. Welcome to BC.

While I agree that a promise was made from the BC government and not followed through, I'm having a hard time understanding your point regarding "one" child making it hard for the other 23 to learn anything. Is there proof of this? Have you had personal experience with this? There is "usually" an aide working with the "special needs" child, if there is more than one child with special needs they may use this one aide for both. I feel a tad offended by your statement.

That is certainly not true of people receiving disability for PTSD. Once verified by a qualified doctor recognized by the DVA there is no need to "reprove the illness". Only for the patient to reconfirm the illness and identify the doctor by whom whom medicine is being prescribed.
I wish people would stop making completely false statements.

Re: Special Needs Children in BC
It is obvious that some people expect unlimited funds to be directed toward keeping Special Needs Children in BC.
Why ?? What does society get in return ??
When YOU decide to have a child and have a child YOU are responsible to care for that child. Not society.

What was the false statement?
