On the one hand, why isn't he using a local lawyer? If he's innocent, how come he has access to someone in NY?
On the other hand, he has been accused of a very serious international crime. Perhaps the law firm with the most experience in the pertinent area of law are based in NY. If he's innocent, he needs to be sure he's not railroaded.
