I've used a hand-held marine horn to scare bears (and kids, dogs, cats and other people) away quite successfully.

That's what we use hiking. It's also part of plan to let our group know if someone is in trouble. Great little tool.

Good stuff. Those are better than bangers if you're hiking in the bush. It's too thick & you tend to be too close to the bear to use a banger. I prefer spray but honestly I've never had to use anything at all yet, they always bugger right off when I say (loudly) "Hi there, bear!" and clap my hands. I run into the buggers a dozen or so times a year on the trails around here.
