Ride2survive cancer ride

Organizers of Ride2Survive say they are driven to participate, as they know 100 per cent of donations go directly to cancer research through the Canadian Cancer Society.

This would be great, but how do you get 100% of the money to go to research? This is what I found:

CBC's Marketplace analyzed the Canadian Cancer Society's financial reports dating back a dozen years. It discovered that each year, as the society raised more dollars, the proportion of money it spent on research dropped dramatically — from 40.3 per cent in 2000 to under 22 per cent in 2011.

Research on metastatic cancers in general is low, in fact, only 5 percent of cancer research funds are spent on metastases while it kills 90% of all cancer patients

In 2010, more than $500 million dollars was spent on cancer research. However, only 2.6% went to cancer prevention.

Something just doesn't jive here. I commend the cyclists for their efforts as well as anyone who donates, but it usually seems like the equivalent of throwing a wad of bills off a bridge and hoping some fall into a bucket at the bottom. Why isn't it the law that the vast majority of funds given to cancer research go to cancer research? I can't find it. but I believe the BC Cancer Agency spends 8% on administration, which would be reasonable. There really would be no use donating to anything but ride2survive if 100% of the funding goes to research as opposed to a fraction of that if you donate elsewhere, but this seems improbable. Bottom line, please do some research before donating, and see if you can choose what type of research your money will go to.

The only way 100% of the donation goes to research is if the donor stipulates that is what the money is to be used for. Mom did that in her will - so much to cancer and so much to heart & stroke with the stipulation the money was to be used for research purposes only.

I don't think that changes things. If everyone that donated wanted 100% to go towards research, they would still take the same cut they do now unless they admitted they have been and are wasting a good percentage of donations.

Not in mom's case - before they received the money they had to sign a letter stating all the money would be used for research and provide documentation.

Yes, but for example, if they put 50% of donations towards research, they could tell 50% of the people that 100% of their money goes towards research. If 100% of the people donating said they wanted 100% to go towards research, they would have to take a cut for administration, etc. which is what they do now. If it was the same cut nothing is changed.

Could be they treat donations and bequests differently. I know the lawyer had them provide a monthly breakdown of where every penny went with corresponding documentation.
