A newly formed political party would like to see Vancouver Island become Canada's 11th province.

The Vancouver Island Party has launched a petition to put pressure on the provincial government to hold a 2021 referendum asking Islanders to vote on the issue.

Premier laughing it off

B.C. Premier Christy Clark laughed off the idea of an independent Vancouver Island when she was asked about it.

"Well I'll tell you, if they leave British Columbia, they're not going to be getting those LNG revenues," she said at a National Aboriginal Day event at the Royal B.C. Museum.

Let them separate from BC, sell the ferries, cut off their electricity until they pay the bill, and move the capital to Surrey with the rest of the criminals.

Hmmm..... where to place BC new Capital..... Vancouver or smaller City in the interior.... Kamloops or Kelowna.
As if this would ever happen

Kamloops would be a good place too. I bet the crime would get cleaned up there pretty quick. OR Penticton, real close to the new prison.

History has been there, done that . . .

From Wikipedia, "In 1849, the Crown Colony of Vancouver Island was created . . . ." The island and the mainland were eventually united in the colony cum province which joined Confederation in 1871.

My X and I originated from there in the 1980s before moving to Williams Lake and then (now) West Kelowna. It is a silly idea to break up the province into smaller parts unless that's what we want, balkanization. I love Victoria, the only other place I'd want to live, but separate province: get serious.

The guy 'leading' the new party is a Conservative of the 'Anti-Choice' wingnut brigade. He's an idiot who will only get 'some' support from other idiots.

The capital should be moved to Ft. St. John, overseeing the flooded valley of Site C.

B.C. Premier Christy Clark was asked about the newest addition to her political opposition, but brushed the suggestion aside with an attempt humour.

“Well I’ll tell you, if they leave British Columbia, they’re not going to be getting those LNG revenues,” she told reporters at a National Aboriginal Day event at the Royal BC Museum.

Now that is REALLY humorous of our Premier 'L'Amour de Camera'...

I'm not sure what the point would be but from a purely statistical point of view Vancouver Island is certainly large enough and has a large enough population to be it's own province.

It is more than 5 times as large as PEI and about 60% as large as NS. It has more than 5 times the population of PEI and it has a larger population than both New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador as well.

Listening to the person that is trying to push the idea it is quite apparent however that the elevator may not be going all the way to the top floor. Free ferries? A bridge between Campbell River and the Mainland? Free post-secondary education for everyone?

And who exactly would be paying for this? Someone on here said he is a "conservative" but his ideas sound a lot more socialist than conservative to me.

The idea of "The Province of Vancouver Island" probably might have been a little bit more realistic 100 or 125 years ago but I don't see the point in duplicating services in this day and age.

I think it's a silly idea for sure. I mean the demographics support it, but it would likely affect both VI and BC negatively. Particularly in regards to federal funding and transportation systems.

That said, island people are crazy. Can VI take the Gulf islands with them?
