Vancouver moves to eliminate natural gas in new buildings

Post by oneh2obabe »

The City of Vancouver has passed a motion to eliminate green house gas emissions, including the use of natural gas, from all new homes and other buildings by 2030.

The Zero Emissions Building Plan was discussed at council on July 12 and at a public hearing on July 13. The plan is part of the Renewal City Strategy, passed in November 2015, which aims to eliminate greenhouse gases by 2050.

According to the city, buildings are Vancouver's largest source of greenhouse gas emissions — making up 56 per cent of all emissions in 2014. Of all the energy used by buildings, natural gas accounts for 26 per cent.

Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.

I hope everyone that lives in Vancouver owns a chainsaw and axe. Let's see....this wacko electorate opposes Gateway, opposes Kinder, opposes Site C, opposes run of river, and opposes coal terminals.
Next Gregor and his ecosocialists will be suggesting a giant biosphere dome over Vancouver. What an idiot. If he thinks housing is unaffordable in Vancouver now, what is this kind of policy going to do but drive up the prices of homes and buildings that are grandfathered to use Natural Gas lest people want to live in a cubicle heated by the sun. Bit of a challenge when it rains 3 days out of 4.

I love ideas. Now the real question.....how? What will Vancouver do to actually make this a plausible reality other than saying "go do this".

Do they have viable alternatives or are they just making noise to sound good.

You could pass a rule declaring every single child is required by municipal law to have 3 good meals of non processed food every day, they could even put out a list of the only allowable foods........yet if there is no programs to encourage and help people manage this, it will simply not happen.

Wishing for better things is great, but mainly noise, creating a system that offers better things to people is even better.

Sadly all levels of politics in our country are more interesting in sounding great than actually being great.

Your right but the scary thing is he can mandate a building code for Vancouver. Just like he mandated all new buildings cannot have round door handles anymore in the interest of handicapped people. He can't mandate what people feed their kids.

man. the solar industry is going to explode!! people will surely be smart enough to see that they are being leveraged and manipulated. so use the alternative and have some sort of control over costs and constantly rising fees.

Let's just revert to bronze age technology in general while we're at it.

Well in terms of cars, Vancouver he made efforts to be green. Mass public transit. Bike lanes throughout the city. The longest metro lines in Canada.

But again, expanding transit further is another things residents have voted against.

interesting point. i think that is a good idea. there is amazing technology from nordic countries with fire burning stoves that are amazingly efficient. people should start to use them and heat homes with wood again.

How dumb are people to think that burning wood will help the carbon footprint. [icon_lol2.gif] [icon_lol2.gif] [icon_lol2.gif]

actually smart people have been making wood stoves more efficient for years. but dumb people keep the status quo and shrug off anything other than industry fuels and converters.
