Let's say the government put up the money for research for the mentioned post where it's pennies a dose instead of thousands of dollars per treatment, and it worked for only half the people... how much would they save on healthcare costs in the long run?

Hmm. Interesting, but would that scenario ever actually happen?

People love fund raising . . . silent auctions, golf tournaments, on and on . . . and they don't complain about spending the money, it's voluntary unlike taxes; we just maybe need a tiny bit of regulation of the charities (they are spending public monies through tax receipts) to control executive and other salaries, all the usual stuff like offices, travel and perks, and assure a minimum amount but of significance relative to the fund raising, goes to actual researchers.

Well since we have a 30 billion deficit and these organizations use at least that much a year, where would that cash actually come from. Currently it comes from generous people and through fundraising (as gross as a lot of it is)

Currently there is thousands in costs attributed to the treatments yet the actual patients rarely pay a tiny fraction of that amount, in reality, the healthcare costs wouldn't change in the least, in fact they would increase most likely if the research costs were added to things. Instead of donations by voluntary individuals it would be massive tax increases paid by everyone and the admin would be double I bet, because government always makes things better and cheaper. lol

I like the idea of charities, sadly they have become so big and dealing in such values that there is always going to be corruption and side deals. When dealing in billions, misplacing the odd million is easy....sadly
