Just go to any insurance broker and ask for private auto insurance. You will still have to buy your basic and 3rd party insurance through ICBC, but collision and comprehension premiums can be purchased through a private insurer. I recommend "Family Insurance".

Western Financial can give you some good options. Get quotes as it is private and open to competition.

ICBC has been more expensive than third-party options for optional coverage for a long time anyways.

That is true. Now that ICBC refuses to insure these cars, private insurance is now the only option.

however private insurance has downsides....heard a horror story or two where insurance didn't pay out in circumstances ICBC would have.

And maybe ICBC pays out too many claims they shouldn't and is part of the problem why their rates are higher? Just sayin.
As far as I am concerned, the threshold should be at 80k for vehicles that are non commercial.

I think its a big copout... It only affects about 3000 vehicles province wide.
And not sure its true, but I have heard they have a 10,000 deductible..
I think its just PR fluff.. Bet they are topheavey wage wise , with not a realistic output for wages paid..

An $80K truck doesn't go from 0 to 150kms/hr in less than 20 seconds. Of course, the next limitation will be placed upon HP. Any 1986 Toyota Corolla can obtain 600 HP. ICBC's next step will be to refuse to insure high HP cars in the future, as soon as they show a trend in the stats. that support their profits.
