So much for Christy Clark supporting Trump and thinking he would be 'easier to deal with' on softwood lumber:

Donald Trump announces 20 per cent tariff on Canadian softwood lumber

Christy Clark was put over a barrel by Oil & Gas executives when she was negotiating away our LNG, now she just got put over a log by Donald Trump! This BC Liberal government has no idea what it is doing, particularly high school Christy!

In 2006, British Columbia had the largest share of lumber exports in Canada at (63%) followed by Quebec (16%), Ontario (8%) and the other provinces (13%). Negotiating the Softwood Lumber Agreement with the US is obviously a Federal government responsibility… so why was this Christy Clark government seemingly taking the lead on this matter? She hired and appointed David Emerson as B.C.’s Trade Envoy to the U.S. specifically to address this Softwood Lumber Agreement issue with the US... so after today's 20% Softwood Tariff announcement, did we get our money's worth out of David Emerson and Christy on this file?

http://globalnews.ca/news/2999152/5-things-to-know-about-canadas-softwood-lumber-trade-war-with-us/

"In the early 2000s, for example, the U.S. imposed a combined duty of 27.22 percent" - so this time 20%. Maybe we got them them to dull the pencil a bit. 7.2% would be worth the cost of sending some representatives.

2016 full year results: BC softwood lumber exports were 69.4% of Canadian exports.

Trump is playing the politics of protectionism. No provincial politician has a lot of influence over that.

Interestingly, Trump seems to miss the point that 25% of US wood product exports are going to Canada. He also seems to miss the point that 28% of US wood product exports are sold to China - 41% of that being raw logs. Raw log exports by US privately held timberlands have been growing by as much as 20% per year.

From that Global article note this:

"Outside of the Maritimes, most forests in Canada are provincially-owned, while in the U.S. they’re privately-owned. The U.S. has long alleged that allows Canadian producers to sell their lumber at a lower price, undercutting American producers in the process."

The Republicans tried to get a bill to Trump to sell off 3.3 million acres of federal land to private interests in February. It got squashed. Those big money interests in the US don't like our public ownership, and if they could change that, they would be here snapping up land.
The middle path - everything in moderation, and everything in its time and order.

Aha!

Coalition Membership and Purpose

http://www.uslumbercoalition.org/general.cfm?page=2

The U.S. Lumber Coalition is an alliance of large and small softwood lumber producers from around the United States that formed in 1985 to respond to the devastating effects of Canada's lumber subsidies on the U.S. lumber industry.
The aim of the Coalition is to effectively address Canada's unfair softwood lumber trade practices, including its gross under-pricing of timber. The Coalition asks Canadian provinces to allow fully open market competition to determine the price of timber. In the absence of such reforms, the U.S. lumber industry will continue to assert its rights under the U.S. trade laws to offset the unfair advantages provided to its Canadian counterparts by government subsidies and log export restrictions.

And the

Carpenters Industrial Council of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, (http://www.uslumbercoalition.org/doc/US ... 252016.pdf ).

Hmmm, ‘Brotherhood’ sounds kinda socialist.

So Don's supporting those left-wing fascists?

Whisper that in his ear, and maybe he'll do a 180.

Or maybe BC needs the NDP to negotiate with these guys.

(Sorry, I can't vote here.)

David Emerson. Isn't he the guy who 'negotiated' the last softwood lumber deal, the one where Harper ended up giving Bush Jr. $1 billion to sign the agreement?

Yes that's the guy, he is also the past President and CEO of Canfor Forest Products and is one of Christy's top 1% friends in high places. They all mingle togeather in that upper-class circle. David Emerson used to dabble in federal politics as well, never could tell if he was a Liberal or a Conservative, but when it comes to corporate big money interests, who cares?

I think the biggest thing affecting the forest industry is dwindling markets. Most of the mill closures can be closely linked to the meltdown in the US housing market, and that's only going to get worse with Trump at the helm. We are fortunate that offshore markets have picked up a lot, but we need lots of work there to make gain any degree of independence from the American market.

I thought that Jim Shephard ( CC4BC ) ( Corporate Contributors 4 Backing Christy ) was the past president and CEO of Canfor. ???
